How do out of hours GP prescriptions work if pharmacies are closed?

Does anyone know what happens if you see GP Out of Hours and they give you a prescription? How do you get it filled if the chemist is closed? 🤔

There will be one open somewhere, it can just be a pain finding them. Ask the GP if they know where is open

IncaAztec · 05/04/2026 17:25

Even today? 🤔

Yes, there are always emergency pharmacies open for just this situation.

Needmorelego · 05/04/2026 17:27

There should always be one pharmacy open in an area.
They take turns in being open on days like today.
If the Out of Hours staff don't know which one it is then 111 might have the information.

There will be one somewhere in your area, it’s part of the commissioning arrangement. Might not be near though.

Even today? 🤔

Yes. I have ended up at the emergency pharmacy on Christmas Day before now

ScaryM0nster · 05/04/2026 17:27

The out of hours GP services seem to have pharmacy links. Either they’ll aim you at an open pharmacy, tell you to go in the morning if it can wait, or dispense enough of whatever it is to buy you time.

Theres generally one pharmacy in an area that has the bak holiday opening.

Sid9nie · 05/04/2026 17:27

Yes, there will be one open today. There's a rota. Might have to travel a bit though.

Bournetilly · 05/04/2026 17:28

The pharmacy next to my work is open today, until 9pm. You’d just have to travel. It would be about 35 mins from my house (not sure if there’s a closer one though).

TroysMammy · 05/04/2026 17:28

Check 111 or your Health Board's web page, they post pharmacy rotas during bank holidays. Eg one in my town is open between 4pm-6pm today and the big ones, Boots/Superdrug are open tomorrow.

TallulahMazda · 05/04/2026 17:29

If you google your local ICB or NHS service provider in your area they will produce a list of emergency pharmacies which are open today. Your urgent care provider will also be able to tell you which pharmacies are covering the bank holiday. Depending on what it is you are prescribed and for who (adult/child) you may also be given a supply from
urgent care if they stock it.

confusedlots · 05/04/2026 17:49

There is a bank holiday rota. There will be one in your area open maybe just for an hour or so in the afternoon for this purpose, but you may need to travel. The out of hours service will also have a stock of common antibiotics and painkillers etc which can be used as back up.

CountryMouse22 · 05/04/2026 17:53

Try the NHS website. Chemists usually give details of those open on a rota system. Although at 6pm on a Sunday it might be difficult! Good luck.

IncaAztec · 05/04/2026 19:29

If it helps anyone to know, they give out prescription medication from the out of hours if there is nowhere open. I'm guessing it's just for common prescriptions.

My nearest hospital has a pharmacy open until midnight. 111 or the OOH GP will advise you on the closest one.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/04/2026 21:41

I was picking up my prescription on Friday. The pharmacy had up a list of which were open when over the BH. OOH would have the same list.
