I know there were many threads on Dubai and ‘influencers’ the Guardian has done a shocking piece on a OK businessman who was detached there and how corrupt the country is…validates many of those calling out ‘influencers’. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/apr/05/british-father-son-dubai-fortune-wanted-men-prison-beaten-tortured?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I read this too, surprised but not surprised.
Horrific for anyone imprisoned. I suspect Dubai is over now as a destination for British influencers, anyone trying to convince others that it's a paradise will look like an absolute idiot.

I will admit to a bit of schadenfreude towards acquaintances who have moved to Dubai and been scathing towards the UK, not paying tax while renting and spaffing their money, who are now expecting the UK government to rescue them

I’m not convinced anything will change.
people won’t think anything can happen to them.

Seems the Dubainfluencers are taking a break.

Seems like the family was very naive (blinkered) to the realities of Dubai even though they had been there for decades. The son over-extended his business and then did a runner when he went into debt and needed to use the NHS back in Britain.

They happily enjoyed the riches and turned a blind eye when it didn't affect them. When this went wrong, they found out what Dubai is really like.

I hope the father and son find some peace and recover from this ordeal. Probably it has made them realise that there are more important things than money and flashy cars.

Nothing will change. The kind of people who are easily influenced by Dubai influencers aren’t exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.

That's not the reality of Dubai for most people though, is it?
