London Transport Museum Depot open day?

Has anyone been to one of these? I’m looking at the website and there seems to be a lot of structured stuff going on. Do you also get to just wander about as you would at any other museum or is it all ‘led’? I’m thinking of going next weekend but I just like to be able to do our own thing. I imagine it will be very busy, but DC would love to go.

Sorry for the stupid question but I find it hard to process information so always prefer real life experiences to trying to work out wha a website means

You can definitely wander around by yourself.

Is this the one in Covent Garden? Definitely a wander around kind of place with a little play area for toddlers.
it’s mostly just vehicles to look at, most of them you can sit in.

I went to the one in Acton in 2012. I definitely just wandered around as I liked. If it’s that one though you used to have to book well in advance.

We went to the depot at Acton a few years ago. It's like a big storage hangar with vehicles on display, you can walk around. I think they put activities on as i imagine it could be quite a dull /short visit unless you are a real transport enthusiast. I think there is a little train to ride on?

MrsKateColumbo · 04/04/2026 19:58

I've been loads
Yes you walk around the depot, they have loads of tram/tube trains and you can get on them and sit down. There are guided walks but ive never done one.

There's a tiny ride on train that's about £1 each

They often have activities. It's rrally good if your "special interest" is london transport!

Tickets are still showing in the website for a week on Saturday, I’m going to grab some now thank you.

The train ride will go down well if that’s still on!
