Are you Oxford or Cambridge?

The boat race is on today, and I’m rooting for Oxford. Apparently, whether someone supports Oxford or Cambridge is a good way of assessing their character (like whether they prefer dogs or cats).

Cambridge is usually associated with reason and science. It’s the university that produced Newton and Darwin and Bertrand Russell. It’s the university where DNA was discovered. And it’s the university that satirists like Peter Cook and Jonathan Miller attended.

Oxford is for romantics. It’s for those who yearn to escape to a different world. After all, it’s the university where Lewis Carol wrote Alice in Wonderland, Lewis wrote the Narnia stories and Tolkien created Middle Earth. It’s also the university that produced the great aesthetes John Ruskin, Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde.

So are you Cambridge (sceptical, ironic, logical, debunking - a believer in science and reason)? Or are you Oxford (a romantic and dreamer who prefers story and imagination to hard facts)?

Just a lighthearted thread btw. I know you can’t sum up two ancient universities is such a silly and simplistic way.

Was an undergrad at Cambridge (decades ago), now live in Oxford. It’s difficult!

We live closer to Cambridge, so I suppose it should be them although my instinct tends to sway towards Oxford.

awfulapril · 04/04/2026 14:38

Totally agree, Cambridge has the most beautiful colour

Didimum · 04/04/2026 14:41

Cambridge. Because I live there.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 14:42

Should be Oxford as SIL is a graduate from there but one of my favourite ever boyfriend’s went to Cambridge! Oxford edges it.

FoolOfShips · 04/04/2026 14:43

Oxford all the way!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/04/2026 14:43

Oxford. My son went there. Much more attractive colour. Pretty pleased at the moment!

LamentableShoes · 04/04/2026 14:43

I'm a sceptical reasoner, but I'd argue that makes me appreciate beautiful and joyful things more deeply as I know they're real!

For example I like imaginative stories if they work (within the world given) and don't just pull out "and then this magic thing happened" to get out of a plot dead-end...

awfulapril · 04/04/2026 14:58

Navy blue? Nah

VanCleefArpels · 04/04/2026 15:10

I am MA Cantab, and the colour (affectionately known as Cambridge green) is the best.

Iliketulips · 04/04/2026 15:14

I tend to support Cambridge as they have to give more time to it, due to travel for training. DH supports Oxford as DD got herself a scholarship at an Oxford school, so we visited quite a bit

PermanentTemporary · 04/04/2026 15:16

Cut me and I bleed light blue.

AmazingGreatAunt · 04/04/2026 15:17

Oxford, rowed for my college when I was there. Terrific race today, so delighted.

iwishihadaname · 04/04/2026 15:18

Oxford as a town person

awfulapril · 05/04/2026 02:12

Er... think it's Cambridge blue m8

awfulapril · 05/04/2026 02:12

Voila

Are you Oxford or Cambridge?
canyon2000 · 05/04/2026 08:12

Oxford as I was born there and lived there for over 50 years. I am definitely more scientific than romantic though!

FabulousFreshias · 05/04/2026 09:14

Cambridge as that’s where I was fortunate enough to go to uni !

Crunchymum · 05/04/2026 09:24

Personality wise I'm Cambridge but I'm always team Oxford (my friend lived there for years so I've spent a lot of time there)

Carleslireis · 05/04/2026 09:25

I am an alumna of both so I am always supporting whoever wins 😁

ImWearingPantaloons · 05/04/2026 09:35

Oxford! Lived there for years so I’d feel I was being traitorous supporting Cambridge.

1000StrawberryLollies · 05/04/2026 09:37

Oxford! Rowed for my college while I was there.
