The boat race is on today, and I’m rooting for Oxford. Apparently, whether someone supports Oxford or Cambridge is a good way of assessing their character (like whether they prefer dogs or cats).
Cambridge is usually associated with reason and science. It’s the university that produced Newton and Darwin and Bertrand Russell. It’s the university where DNA was discovered. And it’s the university that satirists like Peter Cook and Jonathan Miller attended.
Oxford is for romantics. It’s for those who yearn to escape to a different world. After all, it’s the university where Lewis Carol wrote Alice in Wonderland, Lewis wrote the Narnia stories and Tolkien created Middle Earth. It’s also the university that produced the great aesthetes John Ruskin, Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde.
So are you Cambridge (sceptical, ironic, logical, debunking - a believer in science and reason)? Or are you Oxford (a romantic and dreamer who prefers story and imagination to hard facts)?
Just a lighthearted thread btw. I know you can’t sum up two ancient universities is such a silly and simplistic way.
