Missed hairdresser appointment

I missed my hairdresser appointment this morning. It wasn’t in my phone calendar and I actually didn’t think I’d booked it. Got a call off the hairdresser angry that I hadn’t contacted her. I do feel unwell.

Should I offer to pay her? I’ve also been quite depressed recently.

Yes you should

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 12:28

I feel awful by the way, really guilty, but I just assumed I hadn’t rebooked my last appointment like I usually do.

Ok I’ll ring her and arrange to pay.

If she'd called to let you know and you feel it's on you and wish you'd caught it, you could offer to pay.

But the fact that she was 'angry' (and assuming this is the first time), I wouldn't actually go back.

The thing is, when I was in a mental health hospital and missed an appointment when I saw her and explained she said it was fine and not to worry about it. I offered to pay then and she refused to accept. I didn’t have access to my mobile phone then.

Yes, you should pay. It was a genuine mistake, but she shouldn't be out of pocket, especially as this is the second time you've missed an appointment.

She’s a very good hairdresser and I would want to return. I just genuinely forgot. These appointments usually go straight into my phone at the time of the last appointment eg in the salon. And it wasn’t there so I thought, oh well, I hadn’t booked it.

You don't have to pay her you can apologise say you are ill and forgot but you don't have to pay her, my hairdressers takes deposits if you miss an appointment, but i wouldn't pay full price.

The first time I literally could not ring!

But I get your point. I will pay her.

I might just offer half price.

Offer to pay something for goodwill OP but not full price. If she persists in being unpleasant then don't go back to her. You are unwell and it was a genuine oversight. It sounds as though you have other issues to worry about.

I wasn't trying to be accusatory. You genuinely couldn't have let her know, but it's still two missed appointments on her end.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

Hellieboar · 04/04/2026 12:40

Okay, on balance, if she was reasonable with you the first time and understanding of why you couldn't contact her and refused to accept payment, maybe this time you owe her. Especially if you'd like to keep going back.

However, I'm still taken back by the jump to ringing you angrily. Surely this happens occasionally and it's annoying, but you're professional and more so if you have an idea that someone's particularly struggling.

Looking after yourself by going to the hairdresser is a common thing people just can't do when struggling with mental health.

MaryBeardsShoes · 04/04/2026 12:42

Er….. this is entirely on you! You need to pay her and full price. I’m surprised she doesn’t have this in her terms and conditions. Mind you I am self employed and currently down £500 quid because of non-payers, despite solid T&Cs so maybe they aren’t worthwhile.

Lomonald · 04/04/2026 12:43

I don't want to be condescending but I think going forward maybe ask her to write your appointments on a card, then you can put it in your phone when you get home.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 12:46

Like I said though genuine mistake on my part it’s not like I had the appointment in my calendar and just didn’t want to go. And I am genuinely ill. Have hurt my back.

My hairdresser takes a 50% deposit when you make a booking. I guess they got fed up with no shows. Maybe you could offer half?

No that sounds a good idea. Like I say usually when I leave I generally put the appointment in my phone then and there. I actually thought as I hadn’t noticed a hair appointment in my phone that she was away at Easter and I’d not booked another appointment.

It is easily done to be fair, my memory is shocking and i need to put it in my phone right away or I forget until thankfully, I get the WhatsApp reminder.

I think this also comes into it, I am quite depressed right now, and hair appointments etc are way down on my list of priorities right now. No excuse though.

She was maybe more irritated than angry that you didn't show up offer to pay something as a goodwill gesture, and tell her you are ill.

Lastofthesummerwines · 04/04/2026 12:56

I have found that if you miss or try to rearrange an appointment with someone self employed they act all nice and accepting, hums of aww it happens hun don't worry about it but then when you try to rebook they ghost you or there's "no appointments" for agesssss hun basically them telling you to find someone else.

I'm self employed and my terms are a minimum of 24 hours in advance. No payment - no service. It certainly weeds out non payers. If I missed a hairdresser's appointment I'd pay in full. I've been going to my hairdresser for over 40 years and wouldn't want her to be out of pocket.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 12:57

Update, just rang her, she said not to worry and no charge but I insisted and paid her half the amount over the phone just now.
