Missed hairdresser appointment

I missed my hairdresser appointment this morning. It wasn’t in my phone calendar and I actually didn’t think I’d booked it. Got a call off the hairdresser angry that I hadn’t contacted her. I do feel unwell.

Should I offer to pay her? I’ve also been quite depressed recently.

It doesn’t matter why. It’s still her livelihood. She has bills to pay.

I get that! But I didn’t know I had the appointment then. I was dosed up on medication, psychotic, insomnia, anxiety. I wasn’t on this planet basically.

I think you should rebook now and if you can, offer to pay upfront. That’ll reassure her that you’ll be coming. If you’re on an updated iPhone, you can send your self a delayed text as well as adding it to a calendar.

That was the first time you missed your appointment, OP.
The second time wasn't for the same reason, and you could have/should have contacted her.

Zov · 04/04/2026 13:51

Oooooh, this is so tricky. I see both sides.

I'm sorry you having been ill and struggling with your mental health @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain and I wish you well, but yeah, the hairdresser is not in the wrong here, and she was right to be annoyed that you didn't show again. (I appreciate there was a good reason the first time.)

As several posters have said though, they really do need to find a system that automatically texts a reminder (like the GP/NHS/Dentist/Opticians.) They would get much fewer no-shows then. My hairdresser is the same, they give me a little card with the appointment on it (if I book it in the salon,) and that's it. If I book it myself I have to put it on my Google calendar immediately or I will forget! 😬

I agree with the poster saying you should offer half towards the next appointment in advance. As a goodwill gesture.... Seems like she calmed down after a while as she said 'don't worry about it' later on.

Try not to get worried or upset about it, I am sure she has had people not show before, and had a mini moan at them. Grin Just get her some flowers and pop in and book the next appointment, and pay half towards it. (AND PUT THE APPOINTMENT IN YOUR CALENDAR!!!!!!!'

Enjoy your Easter break.... Flowers

I think everyone appreciates that ... Flowers I think some posters are just trying to say whether you just forgot or couldn't be arsed to go, or whether there was a serious reason you couldn't go - accident or illness - she still has bills to pay.

So with respect, she's not really going to be that interested in the reason why you didn't show, she is just annoyed she's lost the money. She could have slotted someone else in if the appointment had been cancelled the day before or something.

I know you were very ill, and I appreciate that, but to her, she is losing business.

StephensLass1977 · 04/04/2026 13:56

Well, if you're making a habit of it, maybe she's started to get annoyed now, especially as she didn't charge you the first time you didn't show.

I genuinely hope you're OK but nor should her business and pocket suffer.

Just saw your update, glad you came to a sensible arrangement.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 13:00

To be fair to me, when she rang I’d completely forgotten the appointment (as it wasn’t in my calendar) and I was caught off guard and didn’t think to offer payment.

I’m now going to ring back and pay the other hair though. As that’s fair.

Oh I don't think you have to pay in full, you might be overthinking now maybe leave it as is, then when you are up to it make another appointment.

AnnaQuayRules · 04/04/2026 13:59

Of course you need to pay. I once forgot a hair appointment and was mortified. I paid for it without being asked. There's no way my lovely hairdresser should have been out of pocket for my mistake

Foxytights · 04/04/2026 14:00

Toni and Guy make you pay full price if accidentally you miss an appointment - in my experience.

Yes but like I say, I didn’t know I had the appointment today! I only knew when she rang me this morning!

Honestly OP you dont need to look for another hairdresser, or call her back, pay her more money or send flowers. You've apologised and agreed with her to pay half which is fair. Please dont overthink this and let it get you down. These things happen all the time, its no big deal. Some really over the top responses on here. Just forget about it now and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

tachetastic · 04/04/2026 14:06

Yes, of course you should offer to pay. She turned up. You're the one at fault here. Why on earth do you think your hairdresser be the one out of pocket?

Phone her and offer. There's a good chance she won't actually make you pay, or only pay half, but offering is the decent thing.

She could have given that slot to a paying customer who right now is walking around with terrible hair. 😜

Besidemyselfwithworry · 04/04/2026 14:06

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 12:32

She’s a very good hairdresser and I would want to return. I just genuinely forgot. These appointments usually go straight into my phone at the time of the last appointment eg in the salon. And it wasn’t there so I thought, oh well, I hadn’t booked it.

I’d send a bunch of flowers to the salon to apologies and bank transfer her the money if you wish to return
she was probably ok the first time but anymore is maybe pushing it??
she could have given the slot to someone else aswell is her thinking.

Pessismistic · 04/04/2026 14:07

Op don’t beat yourself up your not well mistakes happen you have paid half suggest deposits going forward until she can trust you again don’t leave if you like her. It’s hard when your feeling depressed nothing is as important as getting through the day I think you have learnt your lesson and I hope hairdresser will keep doing your hair.

Zov · 04/04/2026 14:08

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 14:02

Yes but like I say, I didn’t know I had the appointment today! I only knew when she rang me this morning!

With respect though, it's not her fault that you didn't make a note of the appointment. Yes I know hairdressers should have text reminder systems like others (NHS/Dentist/Optician etc) but they don't, so the onus was on you to record the date on your calendar. You are leaning towards making out it's the hairdresser's fault now.

ThriveAT · 04/04/2026 14:14

Yes, pay. Your depression / lack of organisation is not her problem. She turned someone away so she could reserve you a slot.

katepilar · 04/04/2026 14:15

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/04/2026 13:08

I just said in pp that this appointment wasn’t in my iPhone calendar. Nor written down. I had no idea I had an appointment today.

It looks like I’ll have to find another hairdresser which is a shame as she’s so good. I also told her about my mental health issues eg why I missed the other appointment and she was really understanding and caring towards me.

I totally get why she was upset today though.

Even if MH is a struggle its still on you that you forgot about your appointment. Its hardly the case of her giving you an appointment without you knowing, is it.

The fact it wasnt in your phone isnt relevant.

Delphiniumandlupins · 04/04/2026 14:17

I think your hairdresser will be very pleased you have called back to apologise for missing your appointment and offered to pay. I don't think you need to find another hairdresser. Nor do you need to give more details of your health issues. If you think a card with future appointments written down would be helpful, ask for that.

Thanks! I feel bad enough as it is and embarrassed about going back.

Just ordered flowers for Tuesday as will be too late to deliver today.

I honestly find it so weird when hairdressers don’t send a reminder text, easy enough to do automatically. It prevents so many missed appointments and gives people the chance to cancel if needed.
Also yes to deposits or a card hold.

Hairdresses arent your personal assistant to keep on top of your calendar. How very odd to expect a reminder.

400rider · 04/04/2026 14:22

My hairdresser sends a confirmation by text on making an appointment and then you can add it to your calendar in your phone with a reminder to sound. They send a reminder 7 days before too incase you need to cancel.

Maybe ask her if this can be done in future to help you both?

I sympathise, I had a miscarriage and missed my appointment and the hairdresser berated me when I went into rebook, about business time lost. Demanded a deposit on the next appointment (which he refunded once another client told him why I missed, which was good customer service on his part).

Remagirl19 · 04/04/2026 14:24

hairdressers tend to be self employed. She has literally lost earnings regardless of you being ill or overlooking the appointment. I’d not even question paying her the full amount of the appointment. These things happen it’s how we respond that’s important. She has probably already had a few no shows this week and maybe she reacted out of frustration.

How is that your hairdresser's fault, op? It's up to you to write these things down. Everyone is always stuck to their phones when suits, but no one can seem to manage the calendar on it!

Kindly, if you're not up to it, hold off making appointments for the time being.

Exactly when it’s out of your hands to contact them I think there should be some leeway.

With this hairdresser I get a full head of highlights every 2-3 months, plus cut, and I’ve been going there for approx. 3 years now. She knows I’m happy with her and I’ve recommended people to her.

She gave you leeway. She didn’t charge you and now you have done it again.

it doesn’t matter that you have recommended her.
