Would you stay in a hotel that looked like this (pic attached)?

This is what greeted us when we checked into the alleged 3* hotel we booked (in Europe, not in the UK). DP thinks I’m BU to ask for a partial refund. In addition to the shambles shown in the picture, there was no hot water in one of the two rooms we booked and we were awoken at 6.30am by construction work in the hotel.

Not a chance! I would be looking to move hotels.

PinterandPirandello · 03/04/2026 21:33

I wouldn’t be happy with that.

As pp no way!!

It’s a fucking death trap. You mean you stayed the night?!

ILoveDaffodills · 03/04/2026 21:35

I wouldn't be staying there, I'd insist on them moving me to a hotel instead of a building site

ThePigletsTrotter · 03/04/2026 21:35

Errrr….no.

Eastie77Returns · 03/04/2026 21:42

We arrived late at night, en route to our actual destination, and there didn’t seem to be any where else to stay locally. Plus I’d already paid upfront via Booking dot com. I have put in a complaint and asked for at least a partial refund but DP thinks we haven’t got a leg to stand on because there is a note stating the hotel is undergoing some renovation work. However it states that the work doesn’t impact the hotel’s guests!

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/04/2026 21:45

I’d be more bothered by the lack of hot water and the construction noise than the state of the reception area depending on what the rest of the hotel amenities are like. I would expect a refund if I can’t get washed and can’t sleep till a decent hour on holiday.

Gatekeeper · 03/04/2026 21:48

Bloody hell...that is dreadful. Looks like the hotel 'Ellsbells' in Carry on Abroad !

Springandaprayer · 03/04/2026 21:57

If it was cheap enough I would (and have). Same thing, told in advance building work was happening (which was actually an entire floor like a car park with no external walls, just supporting pillars and building noise etc.).

PissOffJeffrey · 03/04/2026 22:06

Like a PP, if this is just the Reception but the rooms were as expected with expected services (heating/air con, running water etc) I wouldn’t have been overly concerned. No hot water in a room wouldn’t be acceptable though - I’d have wanted at least a partial refund for not being able to shower.

DaisyChain505 · 03/04/2026 22:09

This particular photo wouldn’t bother me if it was a quick stop over and not my main hotel for the holiday, especially if I got it at a cheap price but the noise early in the morning and the no hot water would be an issue.

Eastie77Returns · 04/04/2026 08:43

We paid £200 for two rooms including breakfast. Aside from the lack of hot water there were other issues like the bathroom sliding door didn’t work in the room I shared with DD (it was stuck so we couldn’t close it). The wi-fi didn’t work. I suppose they are two minor issues and fortunately it was just a night en route to the lovely hotel we are in now.

But the place genuinely felt like a death trap and I don’t think it should be open at all during this work. The exposed wires from the ceiling were in the restaurant where we had breakfast so we sat down with cables around us and workmen working as we ate.

Did you pay with a cc? Refund or chargeback.

ChaToilLeam · 04/04/2026 09:28

That's an absolute dump! Hope you can get your money back.

Tonissister · 04/04/2026 09:31

Well it does affect the guests. Loud construction noise and no hot water. Plus dangerous dangling wires. I don't know whether Booking.com have any legal responsibility here but do get in touch with them. I'd want more than a discount. Alternative accommodation or a massive discount. Unless the rooms were already very cheap because of the ongoing work. Even so... it looks dangerous.

rwalker · 04/04/2026 09:37

What’s the rest of the hotel like looks like
it looks more dramatic than it is the
suspended ceiling been taken down
they said renovations on going
is email in and complain the noise would of pissed me off

it was one night I’d just crack on you’ll of made by winding yourself up

LlynTegid · 04/04/2026 09:45

Agree about the chargeback if possible.

whynotwhatknot · 05/04/2026 12:27

looks like carry on aborad

how can thy say it hasnt affected you

AgnesMcDoo · 05/04/2026 12:29

Awful

TheChosenTwo · 05/04/2026 12:31

I’m guessing that’s a photo of reception rather than the room you were expected to stay in?!
I don’t think I’d be asking for a refund (although with the lack of hot water you’d be justified) - more just grateful it was only a one night stopover before moving on!

ktopfwcv · 05/04/2026 12:33

YABU to only request a parrtial refund.

Callmeback · 05/04/2026 13:35

That looks awful. I'd definitely be pushing for a significant refund.

It is the entire ground floor. There was no real Reception to speak of, basically someone handing out keys from behind the bar. There was a self check-in booth but it didn’t work. The rooms were awful.

I was grateful we were there for one night!

That is not acceptable full stop for a hotel. Some might argue that the price is irrelevant, but knowing that you have paid £100 a room for this makes it worse. Living in someone else's building site with no hot water is not acceptable. you have not received what you were sold. You should complain to booking.com immediately. I accept that they may say that you should have complained on arrival etc. they could have found alternatives etc. but stand firm. We once found out (while in the airport late at night with 4 tired young children on arrival) that the 3 bedroom place we were staying in had cancelled. Booking.com tried to help and sent us a link to somewhere else, but as well as being pretty unsuitable (hostel type for young party goers, probably the only thing avail at that time) it was dearer on the link they sent, than if we had simply booked it anew via their website. We had to stay there in the end, but it was every bit as unsuitable as imagined. I was pretty cross, and I did stand firm in saying that they had not fulfilled their part of the contract (and worse, profiteered by trying to give us an unsuitable alternative at a dearer price than the open rate). Got my money back.
