Should I ask the people in neighbouring hotel rooms to stop slamming their door?

I’m staying in a hotel with my DC for 2 nights in my home country (Ireland) and arrived yesterday. There is an American family of 5 staying across 3 rooms, one directly opposite mine and the others either side. I’m mentioning their nationality as they are likely to be travelling around Ireland, and thus likely to be annoying multiple fellow guests.

Omg they will not close their doors normally, but are letting them slam closed. They seem to be popping in and out of each others rooms continually - since I started typing this I’ve heard it 5 times. This morning it went on for 90 minutes, I estimate at least 15-20 slams. It’s not bothering the DC but it’s driving me mad.

Should I say anything, or pop a note through their door or ask reception? They do not look confrontational - it’s 2 middle aged adults and 3 children approx 12-17-ish.

Do not approach them! Speak to reception.

Definitely speak to Reception do not try and do it yourself.

I would have a quiet word if you think they're approachable.

It's quite refreshing to see a grown adult MNetter who's willing to do this, instead of the passive aggressive note under the door or complaining to reception.

Once you've asked them, if they don't pack it in, then have a word with reception.

Don't approach them. Tell reception. My DH works in a hotel and they are used to dealing with complaints about other guests and should know how to handle it sensitively.

I was going to suggest storming round and telling them to STFU. However, your advice is probably much better 😉

Thank you all!

Are they fire doors on automatic closers? We've just had one fitted to our flat and it closes ever so slowly and then the last 6 inches it very quickly slams shut. To stop this happening (as our neighbour works nights), I stand outside for what seems an eternity and then grab it just before it slams. If they're in and out then they might just be grateful the door shuts itself?

They were sort of doors that closed automatically, you had to hold it to close it quietly otherwise it slammed. I think it was more that they were in and out of each others rooms every couple of minutes that made it worse. I’ve checked out & informed reception.

I have always wondered why hotels have extra noisy slammy doors. Never stayed in a place that doesn't have them.

Bitzee · 01/04/2026 21:08

They’re probably just heavy fire doors and they are entitled to go in and out of their rooms. I don’t think they’re doing anything wrong per se but equally I get it must be annoying so I would politely ask reception if they have a quieter room you could move to.

I think they're meant to slam, to ensure that they're completely closed. That will be part of the fire protection.

Complain!! Inconsiderate pricks

We have fire doors that slam. I hate when it happens at home, so loud. You must be going crazy…
