Why am I suddenly finding dead flies?

I'm not aware of being bothered by live flies but I am picking up lots of dead ones, maybe 6/8 per day. Not enough to be called an infestation or cause concern that there's something dead somewhere, but I am a bit worried something is making my house so toxic flies can't survive!

The good answer would be it's the cold weather 🤣

Are they bluebottle type flies OP? This happened to us the first Summer of being in our new house.
After researching it I found there is a certain type of fly that lays eggs around window pane seals and when the weather warms up they hatch.
We only had the in the bathroom and we were going crazy thinking they were coming out of the sink so we were leaving plugs in the bath and sink overnight.
We since had a new window unit in at the bathroom and it never happened since.

They are called cluster flies. Nasty things.

CBAwithallthethings · 31/03/2026 15:38

Dead bird down your chimney?

dizzydizzydizzy · 31/03/2026 15:41

Do you have a cat? If there’s a dead body, the cat is likely to show a lot of interest in tbe vicinity.

Probably a dead mouse. We had one, I think it was under the floorboards.

FrothyCothy · 31/03/2026 20:45

Are they quite large? We had cluster flies once, big dopey things which were thankfully easy to get rid of

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 31/03/2026 20:47

We had a pigeon die in the back gutter and it caused this. It was in January when it was dark and miserable so we weren’t out in the back garden to immediately notice.

It was horrible.

Dead mouse

YelramBob · 31/03/2026 21:00

Have you seen your neighbours recently? 👀

Janesput · 31/03/2026 21:10

But why are the flies dying?

OP posts:
Betano · 31/03/2026 21:11

Because there nothing for them to eat

tinyladybird · 31/03/2026 22:22

We had this last year over about 2/3 days..they seemed to come in on a bag of logs for the fire! They would appear one but one, fly about then would find them dead within hours
