What has happened to the BBC?

Scandals aside (which are awful on their own I know) , what has happened and what went wrong for the BBC?

I'm old enough to remember when it was a respected source producing quality (informing, entertaining etc) television. I have many subscriptions on YouTube of shows produced by BBC of yesteryear (and radio plays) that I still find highly entertaining. Rarely do I think that with anything on there now?

What I'm staggered at is their budget - 5 billion! Where does it go? I didn't think I would ever be be tempted or to even think about not purchasing a licence but in recent years I now honestly think it's a possibility.

I know there have been many threads on here before about stopping ones licence and I don't want to open that can of worms but I would like to know as I'm often left guessing, what has caused the decline? I know competition is greater now against on-line but surely that shouldn't stop quality?

It can't compete with Apple Netflix etc. Lots of competitors and people don't watch or listen the same way. You said yourself you subscribe to YouTube.

Too many channels and not enough content. A whole local radio service with very few listeners. It needs a severe pruning.

The real problem is that the BBC has always been a somewhat inward looking organisation. The BBC way was the right way and any developments outside the Corporation could be ignored. Any scandal should be covered up or "managed" to preserve the Corporation's good name.
