Do you think this is a rubbish idea?

Me and my partner are going to cancun in 8 weeks and we are very excited ,especially my partner who is a bit of a plane geek.
He loves watching planes and he’s even get flight radar ha ha
Anyway we have no plans over Easter and both off for the long weekend ..I had a idea of booking the airport hotel on Sunday night for us and booking the runway view room (it’s only showing as £110)
Checking in at 3 and just letting him watch planes from the room, ordering room service and then the next day checking out at 12 and heading into the city for lunch and a few drinks.
Its only 30 mins to the airport from us and there’s a train station which takes us directly there 5 min walk from our house.

is it a good idea or a bit crap that we aren’t actually getting on a plane?
I just thought with our holiday only 8 weeks away it would be fun ..truth be told I love planes too ha ha

Sounds really thoughtful and fun if you both love planes, runway picnic, do it!

UDontaskUDontget · 30/03/2026 14:44

Very thoughtful Easter weekend treat for him (and you!)

Forgottenmyphone · 30/03/2026 14:45

Not a rubbish idea at all. Tbh I think my DH and I wouldn’t mind doing something like that! Do it!

midgetastic · 30/03/2026 14:52

Can you def see the planes from the room?
don’t airports still have plane view areas?

why wouldn’t you?

MightyFlow · 30/03/2026 14:54

Sounds great! And you can track the planes on FlightRadar at the same time.

LamentableShoes · 30/03/2026 15:00

I think there might be an episode of Kath and Kim where they go to the airport for a holiday! Maybe watch that while you're there Grin

bohnerific69 · 30/03/2026 15:02

That’s cute, I’d do that too! Love watching planes, the physics of them blows my mind every time😂

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/03/2026 17:29

That sounds brilliant for people who are into that. Defo go for it.

Planes are amazing aren't they. I used to wonder at the graceful take off and landing of the A380 every day.

SirChenjins · 30/03/2026 17:42

Sounds great! Could you buy/borrow a pair of binoculars to see tgem at close distance? Definitely track them on Flight tracker too - points to the person who spots the actual plane first.

traceybeakersbeaker · 30/03/2026 17:43

I think that is incredibly thoughtful. Do it!

kangaroomouse · 30/03/2026 17:44

Ah fab. My family are plane geeks and have been known to sit at a place near Heathrow with their flasks and chairs watching the planes 🙂

They get up to see the early morning a380s.

ILoveDaffodills · 30/03/2026 17:51

Sounds great! I'd enjoy that! We have a local very small airport (field!!) with a cafe, I enjoy going there & watching all the light aircraft come & go.

if you're sure he'll enjoy it, just book it, if you're not totally sure just ask him.

My older friends adult children booked him a steam train trip for a special birthday, knowing how much he loves them. He was grateful etc, but they spent a lot of money & if they'd asked him he would have chosen a different one (one he hadn't been on before) which cost the same & he would have loved even more.

Needmorelego · 30/03/2026 17:55

As the daughter of a plane spotter I'd say that sounds a very cool thing to do.

BruisedNeckMeat · 30/03/2026 17:56

I think it’s a great idea!

For a future holiday I recommend visiting St Maarten where there is a bar next to the runway. Planes can fly just 1.5m above your head! It’s crazy and amazing!

Anewerforest · 30/03/2026 17:56

Great idea so long as you enjoy it too.

Hillrunning · 30/03/2026 17:59

Im not even into planes and I think this is fun. You could make bingo cards!! Or some other fun game. Do you both drink? There could be a fun drinking game in it too.

ViaRia01 · 30/03/2026 17:59

That sounds lovely if he (and you) is interested in plane watching. I don’t understand what any of that has got to do with Cancun though …?

Hillrunning · 30/03/2026 18:00

Think of all the plane, flight and airport related puns you could make all day!

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/03/2026 18:01

Great idea, OP!

LIke PP, I constantly wonder about the physics and general amazingness of planes. If you ever get a chance, go to the Boeing factory. It is about an hour from Seattle. Another option is Airbus in Toulouse but Boeing was more fun.

I used to love watching Concorde take off when I was at primary school. (

ShodAndShadySenators · 30/03/2026 18:03

Sounds like an idea he'll love and if you'll enjoy it too, what's not to like?

There's also great aircraft watching oppotunities at Corfu Airport and Skiathos (the latter being very similar to St Maartens). Our DS is an aviation fan so every Corfu holiday we can be found near the airport watching and filming. The runway ends at the sea in an inlet, there is a causeway across that you can stay on and the planes come in directly overhead. There are nice restaurants and cafes around nearby with rooftop areas so you can watch from there too. We've done it lots of times and not tired of it yet...

Hillrunning · 30/03/2026 18:04

This idea could really take off. I love what is already on your radar. I think adding in a walk to ward off cabin fever could be just the ticket. Pilot the idea this year to see if it has wings to become a regularly scheduled trip.

Davros · 30/03/2026 18:04

Great idea

BillieWiper · 30/03/2026 18:07

That sounds cute for a plane spotter! I'm sure he'd love it.
