Why was I published on Facebook!

Ginghamtablecloth · 29/03/2026 10:35

How do I get my thread off Facebook??? I thought this was a safe space to discuss things. I know my sister isn’t on Mumsnet but she is on Facebook!!! How do I get it off??

I will never post on this again! This is not a safe space.

OP posts:
outofofficeagain · 29/03/2026 12:03

My threads have ended up in the Daily Mail TWICE!

McSpoot · 29/03/2026 12:04

Rizzz · 29/03/2026 12:00

I think you misread the post you quoted?

I said why would she click 'like' so she gets the MN page in her newsfeed.

Because you don’t have to have clicked on anything to get MN in your FB feed.

saraclara · 29/03/2026 12:07

Lomonald · 29/03/2026 11:15

I just wanted to add an I agree with you Op i don't think chat posts should to put on Facebook either, I hope your post is removed.

I appreciate this is the Internet and mumsnet need traction to the site but posting people's upset on Facebook etc seems a bit low.

That. They crop up on my feed regularly, and Mumsnet seems to choose the juicy threads that are the most likely to cause problems for the OP if the person they're about, sees the thread

People often post and say that they know the person their complaining about doesn't use Mumsnet, but it turns out that that is no protection.

saraclara · 29/03/2026 12:09

YerMotherWasAHamster · 29/03/2026 12:03

What on earth made you think mumsnet was a safe space though?
Its a huge site, known internationally, on the world wide web.
Nothing about that is safe, or private.

Most people would assume that their OP would just be on Mumsnet. Not that MNHQ would be selling their story to the Daily Mail and Facebook.

MacchiatoMavis · 29/03/2026 12:10

Mumsnet really doesn't need to 'sell' anything to the DM. They just help themselves and the hell with the consequences.

busyd4y · 29/03/2026 12:10

Rizzz · 29/03/2026 11:53

If your sister's not on Mumsnet, why would she like the Mumsnet page to get the threads in her newsfeed?

I'm assuming you don't use FB, you don't have to like things or have had any previous interaction with a page to see posts on it in your feed

Are you familiar with advertising and sponsored posts?

busyd4y · 29/03/2026 12:11

DalmationalAnthem · 29/03/2026 11:52

On FB it's a screenshot of the original post, no link, and people laugh/heart/like reacting and commenting on it.

There is a link, it's under every post, I've just looked. No doubt I'll be getting MN Facebook posts for everyone now 😃

Rizzz · 29/03/2026 12:12

According to Justine Roberts they don't sell stories to the Daily Mail.

I mean considering MN is a public site, it wouldn't make sense anyway.

BeardofHagrid · 29/03/2026 12:12

charrona · 29/03/2026 10:39

That’s how the internet works. You post something and the world can see it. You’re anonymous though, what’s the problem?

This is a ridiculous response. Just because someone posts on one website doesn’t mean they are giving their consent for it to be published somewhere else. I agree with the OP, if Mumsnet are doing this then the site really isn’t safe at all. The whole site hinges on its anonymity.

Anewerforest · 29/03/2026 12:13

I got a similar shock OP, finding posts on Facebook. In fact Mumsnet has the right to publish our posts anywhere they like! We give them the right when we sign up. Its buried in the T&C which I didn't read thoroughly enough either. Lesson learnt.

Rizzz · 29/03/2026 12:13

I've used FB since 2010 and I've been on MN since 2011.

Never once has MN come up on my FB feed.

But clearly it does for others.

Either way OP, they didn't publish 'you' on Facebook, they published the anonymous thread you started on their website.

By joining Mumsnet they give their consent as it's in the Ts & Cs.

Granted though, most of us don't read them.

InMyOpenOnion · 29/03/2026 12:18

I have always thought this is bad practice on the part of MN, it's the reason I never start threads. FB has a much bigger and more diverse audience than MN and loads of people are on FB who aren't on MN. Yes it's buried in some T&C's somewhere and yes, if you post something online anyone can see it, yada, yada, yada, but I still don't think it's right to push a thread onto a different platform with a bigger audience.

saraclara · 29/03/2026 12:21

it's the reason I never start threads.

Same here.

I broke my rule for the first time, by OPing on the shopping branch a week or two back. Pretty sure that asking about the Aldi stand mixer isn't going to get me in trouble with any friends or family!

Gettingbysomehow · 29/03/2026 12:21

This happens a lot OP. Thats why most people change the small details so as not to be recognised.
It might be on your facebook but not necessarily on hers. Me and my sister dont get the same articles on out facebooks.
Say nothing, act nonchalant, deny everything it will soon blow over.

helpfulperson · 29/03/2026 12:27

Mumsnet may chose to post stories on their facebook page but it can also appear through different sites. Occasionally you see stories from on here appear on sites like Bored Panda, Reddit etc without any mumsnet acknowledgement just word for word. Once it is on the internet it can be copied and pasted by anyone. Someone could chose to repost it on their own facebook page,

With all the internet safety information these days I don't understand how anyone can thing that a public website with millions of members is a 'safe space'

Tryagain26 · 29/03/2026 12:36

LiloLido · 29/03/2026 11:38

Actual threads or an advert for the site?

Actual threads. There is screenshot of the issue. Then a link to the thread.
It's why I would never initiate a thread.
I agree with the OP. I know it's the internet and everyone can see everything but this site is used by many people as a way to get advice from other women and posting threads of often vulnerable women on Facebook which has a much wider reach and is not policed in the same way is wrong

Threads sometimes also appear on Good Morning Britain, This Morning and the Jeremy Vine show to name but a few.

Of course it’s not a safe space, it’s the internet. And Mumsnet is a business that posts across platforms for profit. Are you really this naive?

Rizzz · 29/03/2026 12:51

Once Justine Roberts sells the stake in MN that she's been in talks about with investors for ages, our threads could end up literally anywhere.

Mind you it's a public forum that you don't even need to join to read, so I guess that's always been the case.

rainbowunicorn · 29/03/2026 12:54

LiloLido · 29/03/2026 11:01

Agreed.

Under what 'banner' is it on Facebook?

An advert?
Someone else's FB account?

It doesn't really make sense to me.

Mumsnet use Facebook to bring traffic to the site. Thats how the internet works. Not really that baffling.

snickersnackers · 29/03/2026 13:02

I had a notification on facebook telling me that my sibling had joined or was following mumsnet on fb! It's why I never start threads and change my name regularly.

That would be a very foolish assumption to make.

The Internet has been around how long now?

If the nature of the Internet is still not understood then that is a huge problem.

How can we teach our children how to use the Internet if we dont understand the nature of it ourselves?

No wonder the government's had to step in!

Edited

I've always said that - that it's worrying how many adults don't understand the internet, and yet they're responsible for their children's internet safety.

Ditto all those who give to the MN beggars who come to tell us they have only £2 to last till the end of the week, and have a 'reason' why they can't take any of the advice given to them.

If their reaction is to give to every scammer on Mumsnet, I despair at the thought of them teaching their children about online trust.
