Since I’ve gone up to 750mg I am so tired ! Literally dragging myself around, my body feels heavy and I just want to lye down and do nothing, I have 2 toddlers which is not helping !! Does anyone else get like this?!

What are you on it for?

Should have said really shouldn’t I! Consultant prescribed for symptoms of pcos, I was on it years ago to kick start ovulation and I don’t remember it making me feel like this, and I was taking 1500mg back then ! I’m meant to be going up to 1000mg and I’m dreading it

It really disagreed with me. It was like flu without the sore throat.

The modified release are much better - the afternoon naps were dropped once I started on these rather than the original tablets.

It really disagreed with my bowels. It was like shitting nuclear waste, but energy wise I was fine

Aww I tried it years ago (pcos and Ttc at the time) I honestly can’t remember much, think I was on 850? think I had to get used to it 🤔 did you have any weight loss?

DaveGroh · 30/03/2026 05:59

I had the really bad shits when I was on it before, it went on for a couple of months, so bad I couldn’t go far from the house 🤣

So did you find it was making you tired aswell ?

@DaveGroh yes, I had some mild gastro symptoms but for me, the overwhelming exhaustion was the thing I couldn't manage. I wasn't sure if it was the Metformin, but switched to the modified release version for other reasons and the exhaustion improved significantly.

Cosleepingadvice · 30/03/2026 07:41

I also took it for PCOS reasons and found the modified release version to be so much better.

marthasmum · 30/03/2026 07:53

Hi OP I looked up side effects as I may have to start metformin. Have you looked on NHS website? It says that extreme tiredness is an unusual sign that needs to be urgently checked out by your GP (though it does list other things alongside eg feeling unwell). I’d say it’s worth discussing
with your GP especially if you don’t remember having last time you took metformin. nhs website

That’s good to know. Did you lose any weight on metformin ?

I cant remember to be honest. I took it to help with conceiving my first child and in the end we needed letrozole + metformin. For my second child, I took metformin and did the Fast 800 diet - I lost 10kg in 12 weeks and conceived naturally. Not sure how much the metformin contributed to the success vs the diet.

Bingbangboo · 30/03/2026 10:04

Probably a stupid question but are you definitely not pregnant?

I had similar reaction, so they put me on prolonged release. I dont get the gastric symptoms from that.

Yes I agree, it could be causing issues with insulin/blood sugar levels. Definitely one for the GP just incase it's not just a normal side effect.

Ahh okay. I also took it to induce ovulation the first time round, it didn’t help me get pregnant though! But I did lose 2 stone which was a lovely unexpected side effect !
