Intolerant to ALL yoghurt?

MrsTravelBug · 29/03/2026 09:52

I am lactose intolerant, so I avoid normal yogurt. I have seen lots of Skye types that say lactose free, sadly however I am still intolerant to those.

Never one to give up easily I have been trying plant based yogurt- I am still having a bad tummy! Is there something about yogurt that I could be reacting too that’s not lactose? I don’t know how plant yogurt is made but I assumed it was a totally different product that just looks/tastes like yogurt. Could it just be a coincidence and I am reacting to something else entirely.

This happens every time I trial yogurt of any kind but I don’t want to live a yogurt less life.

Could be fodmap. You could compare it with the other foods you’ve avoided as part of being/thinking it’s lactose intolerant

Could it be the live active cultures? Or possibly starch or sugar?

MrsTravelBug · 29/03/2026 10:07

What is fodmap, I thought that was something to do with onions?

I am fine with oat and almond as alternatives for milk. I can eat lactose free hard cheese (the Arla one).

Just every time I go back to some kind of yogurt product I end up suffering.

How are you with milk? It could be cows milk protein allergy rather than lactose intolerance. I've seen reports that suggest a lot of people who think they are lactose intolerant are just experiencing non-ige allergy symptoms to the protein. Considering the huge number of babies who have CMPA it wouldn't be surprising.

Yoghurt and hard cheeses are naturally low in lactose. It is likely it's something else you're sensitive to.

I avoid milk, it makes me sick which is why I thought lactose intolerant. Maybe it is the milk protein and not the actual lactose I struggle with. That would explain why those lactase enzyme pills don’t work for me either.

Apparently soy protein and milk protein are similar.

Maybe I will be ok with coconut yogurt! My search continues.

Have you tried homemade yogurt? You can do it with lactose free milk. You could be reacting to something they put into
