What can you get for 25p a week?

Mum has been told she will get 25p extra per week in her state pension from her 80th birthday. I am bemused. How on earth can this be worthwhile. It's £13 for the year which would be worth having in a lump perhaps. But 25p a week or £1 a month doesn't even buy a loaf of bread or a pint of milk.

You can't even buy a Freddo for that.

My NYT subscription costs that I think? Does she like American news and good puzzles?
Seriously though that seems so pointless. Must be an admin cost to administer it too.

A single small piece of fruit like a mandarin

But on top of the 25p, the triple lock will kick in and she will get a chunk more.

It's just a strange hang over from the seventies when, I presume getting to 80 was rarer and something it was felt worth recognising.

LumpyandBumps · 29/03/2026 08:32

It was probably worth having when it was introduced in the early 1970’s.
I can only assume it’s something the government thinks would be too controversial to remove.
It will eventually peter out as it’s not payable to anyone who reaches pension age after the changes in 2016.

My gran said she was going to save hers up and treat herself once a year to a coffee and cake at a local café to give herself something to look forward to 😂 (she was joking, she has a lovely active life)

A single carrot.

A single onion.

Two small bananas or one big one.

I’m already planning what to do with my £10 Xmas PIP bonus. I think by then it’ll buy a couple of bog rolls and a tin of Essentials tomatoes.

BlueSkiesAndSunshiiine · 29/03/2026 13:37

You could buy a bag of sweets monthly I guess lol

Agree, it's odd that they do this. I'd be interested to know the reasons behind it.
