Don’t you think most people dress so casual these days when out in restaurants

looking around me everyone’s wearing jumpers on a Sat night

when I was young on Sat nights most women would be in dresses
in restaurants

perhos it’s because restaurants are colder these days
perhaps people dress more casual just generally now

I’m not one to talk really as I’m also in jeans n jumper as I don’t like being cold plus I’m only with husband and kids

‘I’m only with husband and kids’
OP you’ve kind of answered your own question.
If you don’t think the love of your life and your actual offspring are worth dressing up for, then why would complete strangers dress up to attend the same venue as you?

If I had to wear a dress to go to a restaurant, I'd never eat out! I've not worn a dress or skirt for about 20 years 😄

I like wearing dresses for summer day wear - evening will be trousers. Mostly jeans - funny how these things have changed.

Agree.. in the top London restaurants anything goes now, jeans and a blazer fine.. never used to be.

Coconutter24 · 29/03/2026 20:05

So you were out on a Saturday evening wearing jeans and a jumper yet you were sat there wondering why everyone is wearing jeans and a jumper??

Times change and there are more places to eat than ever. If places can turn down possibly 100s of pounds because a customer is wearing jeans then they must have a great business. That happened to me many years ago at the Paris Ritz. I wanted to look at a menu and the doorman said 'non' as I had jeans on. So I went around the corner to The Crillon where I sat in an elegant lobby and a polite waiter explained the a la carte menu and took my booking. I didn't wear jeans to the dinner btw but this was 25 years ago

How unusual, you can wear Jeans to to the ritz, and were able to 25 years ago, it’s just afternoon tea you can’t, and one other thing, but you can certainly go in to reception and view a menu, maybe something was lost in translation,

Perhaps we looked like we didn't belong. My credit card could have told a different story as The Crillon discovered to their benefit.

DH could hardly keep his laughter in at my rage a few weeks ago when a man was wearing a baseball cap throughout dinner at a very nice restaurant we'd waited several weeks to go to.

Kickinthenostalgia · 29/03/2026 22:33

Personally I think dressing up is far overrated. Comfort all the way. I’ve never understood the big deal about dressing up, s long as your clean and not wearing dirty clothes. Just the same way I will be telling people (or my family) not to wear black at my funeral. It’s a morbid colour, death is sad enough… celebrate my live lived…

LisaVanderpumpy · 30/03/2026 23:44

Well yes at least we can be comfortable and warm these days
I do agree

I just don't remember restaurants being to cold years ago

I hate stretchy wear.

Comfort be damned.

Jokethecoalwoman · 03/04/2026 07:31

Yes everyone seems to dress the same - big baggy jogging suits in coordinating colours like a toddler would wear.
Hideous

My CEO complimented me on my bright green trainers, and on the unicorn I had just put into my presentation. She was wearing white tennis shoes and a floral midi dress. We were sat next to each other because she hot desks in the open plan office like the rest of us.

Times have changed!

I moved from Leeds to a rural county with one nightclub in 1984. Met some lovely new mates. Lets go clubbing they said. I rocked up in my pink silky combat trousers and a crop top. They wore black knee length skirts with blouses tucked in and court shoes. I was like WTF, I thought we were off clubbing!

I never understood the ‘you couldn’t wear trainers in clubs and guys wore suits and ties’ comments because that certainly wasn’t my experience of clubbing in the 80s and 90s but this explains it - it must have been a small town/provincial club thing.

Nothing Is an occasion any more. That’s the problem.

Hit the nail on the head. 👍

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 03/04/2026 09:17

God, i hate dressing up. I feel incredibly self conscious.

I wear the same thing every day: a Superdry t-shirt (and hoodie, if it’s chilly), Fat Face jeans and trainers.
So, it’s very much my uniform.
