Don’t you think most people dress so casual these days when out in restaurants

looking around me everyone’s wearing jumpers on a Sat night

when I was young on Sat nights most women would be in dresses
in restaurants

perhos it’s because restaurants are colder these days
perhaps people dress more casual just generally now

I’m not one to talk really as I’m also in jeans n jumper as I don’t like being cold plus I’m only with husband and kids

Yes, and thank goodness. I never enjoyed getting "dressed up" and much prefer being able to wear whatever I like.

bafta16 · 28/03/2026 20:44

Going out for a meal used to a big deal and people dressed accordingly.

Now replaced by " get some food". Nobody cares.

Hobsonschoiceofhob · 28/03/2026 20:53

@bafta16 this exactly. It used to be a rarity but doesn’t feel as special now

Pedallleur · 28/03/2026 20:54

Dining out is casual these days. The idea of dressing up seems so 20th century. Smart casual is more popular. A restaurant that requires jacket and tie for men is going to limit it's customer base unless it's some expensive hotel type. Nothing to stop people going formal but most places aren't like that now.

Kalanthe · 28/03/2026 20:59

Everyone is dressing more casually, I’m still coming to terms with people wearing t-shirts, trainers and jeans in my glamorous corporate office. They are the majority though and nobody bats an eyelid

EmeraldRoulette · 28/03/2026 21:01

@damelza an elder lemon?!

Yes @LisaVanderpumpy people are much more casual- and I'm quite relieved about it.

Beyond pension age anyway, ha ha 😊Young at heart though and raring to go!

RS1987 · 28/03/2026 21:05

It’s fashion now I think, like wearing trainers in nightclubs

Peony1985 · 28/03/2026 21:09

I bought a baggy cotton dress in a dark grey/blue with interesting sleeves that I thought would work as “holiday dressy”.
In fact it’s now my only dress for birthdays at the pub, theatre, nice dinners or anything that needs effort without looking like you got dressed up.
So weird that a casual dress has replaced about 5 different outfit calls.
Seriously thinking about selling everything else aside from jeans now.

EmeraldRoulette · 28/03/2026 21:10

@damelza it's the lemon bit I was puzzling over 😂

Notmyreality · 28/03/2026 21:10

A jumper! Heaven forbid!

But as you aren’t with anyone important - just your husband and kids - it’s ok. 🙄

AdjacentPossible · 28/03/2026 21:14

I think you’re probably right.

I was never the dressiest person, but I can’t quite imagine what I’d wear to go out properly now.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 28/03/2026 20:33

I think its partly because for many, going to a restaurant was a rare treat, something to plan in advance. Now it's just another meal where you don't cook. Its less special therefore needs less special clothing.

I agree with this also.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 28/03/2026 20:40

Remember back in the early 80s you’d go to a club looking you were going to work 🤣 the fellas in suits and ties and definitely no white socks or trainers ! Used to wear heels and dresses.

These days I’m sewn into my pjs.

I moved from Leeds to a rural county with one nightclub in 1984. Met some lovely new mates. Lets go clubbing they said. I rocked up in my pink silky combat trousers and a crop top. They wore black knee length skirts with blouses tucked in and court shoes. I was like WTF, I thought we were off clubbing!

Mingspingpongball · 28/03/2026 21:59

Dressed casual? Not casually? Ah OP like language, dress sense changes to being less formal

OhFuckyNell · 28/03/2026 22:01

I went to Slovenia last year and was very impressed with the smartness of everyone in ljublana (sp)!

justasking111 · 28/03/2026 22:04

At this time of year I'm so cold lunch or dinner it's nice trousers, smart flat shoes, either a blouse, jacket or a smart jumper. When we had the mini warm spell I did wear dresses. It's 6c again now so warmth is more important.

FoolOfShips · 28/03/2026 22:07

I suppose it depends on the restaurant. I like to wear something nice if I go out to eat (I don't go out to eat often) so I will usually change from whatever I've had on in the day, but I wouldn't wear anything very formal unless it was a higher-end restaurant, and DH is the same.

I would probably wear a day dress or a nice top and skirt to go to an average restaurant.

Last time I went to a posh restaurant, I wore a vintage silk dress - I was pleased to have a chance to wear it as it's spent most of its life hanging in my wardrobe.

ZiggyZowie · 28/03/2026 22:09

It's a shame nobody bothers. The shops are full of dresses but who buys them ?

I was at a christening in a church and the females were in jeans and trainers.

I really think they should have made an effort to look dressed up on a special occasion.

ParisianLady · 28/03/2026 22:15

Perhaps it depends on the restaurant and time of day? I agree that generally some places are more casual but not all.

I still dress up if I’m going out to dinner. Perhaps trousers and a top/ blouse/ cashmere knit, or midi dress and boots, sometimes heals (I know they’re officially out of fashion but some places and outfits do just need heels for me). I wear smarter clothes to the office, not matching suits but never jeans. My DH would always have a smart shirt on for dinner or work.

In summer I wear nice dresses and nice sandals. I have nice handbags that I pick to suit my outfit. I wear wool coats with cashmere hats, gloves and scarves that coordinate. I would never wear trainers with a dress or a skirt.

I don’t wear sports wear unless I’m doing sport. I do not own jogging bottoms, a tracksuit, anything puffy.

If I dress nicely I feel nice. I’m not ever uncomfortable in nice clothes. I don’t believe that nice clothes have to mean discomfort.

binnibonnieboo · 28/03/2026 22:21

I like not dressing up, so think it's a good thing.

Notsosweetcaroline · 28/03/2026 22:22

I love clothes, bought far too many since losing weight, and we went out to dinner tonight, I wear nice smart casual clothes, so tonight I was wearing some wide leg indigo jeans, a velvet blazer , and a silk sleeveless tank, with a pair of loafers. It was a nice restaurant, but tonight I was probably one of the better dressed there.

We go out for dinner often and I always make an effort, we went out last week, and I wore a midi dress, albeit a casual but very nice one, with a fitted leather jacket, in thay instance I was not one of the best dressed.

time before I wore cream wide leg trousers, another silk tank and same leather jacket, there were people about the same level dressed up as me.

all nice restaurants, no one id say is dressed down, there is no joggers, leggings, hoodies etc, everyone looks to have made an effort, and the women all have hair and make up done, but it is not men in ties, and women in dresses and heels,

if we eat in a chain however, it’s very casual, it is jumpers and jeans, and we are the same, it’s usually something we do on the way to something or after, ie a show or cinema.

Itsmetheflamingo · 28/03/2026 19:56

You’re so right, Brits are just the worst at everything.Ugly, fat, unhealthy thick and badly dressed. We should copy those full of class French and Germans immediately. Get me to any kenipe in the Black Forest so I can witness some sophistication.

Charming! Off you trot to the BLack Forest then

JLou08 · 28/03/2026 22:23

Women started dressing for comfort instead of wearing clothing that was designed to attract the male gaze. It's progress.

EdinaTheConfessor · 28/03/2026 22:25

I love a dress or skirt and top and I enjoy dressing up. I used to dress up for the office too when I used to go in even though the majority were in jeans, I would always be in a dress or smart trousers/skirt and blouse.
Now I WFH, and as I run on my lunch break I’m usually in running gear all week, so I like to dress up at the weekends even if it’s just to go to the shops!
Met SIL to do an activity with the kids a few weekends ago, I was in a jumper dress and boots, she was in gym gear as just come from a sport, she made me feel I was weird for being dressed like that “oh I didn’t think to dress up for the occasion!”
