What would you do-dog related

My dd lives in a small apartment block. There is a ground level car park and in one corner, there is a small scrubby patch of grass. It’s against the wall and far too small and grim and surrounded by diesel fumes for anyone to use it for anything. With the knowledge and consent of the landlords, my dd and two other dog owners use it for early morning/late night pees. This morning, my dd found a neat pile of squares of dark chocolate in the middle the patch. Obviously it’s freaked her out a bit. Can anyone think of an innocent explanation? And if you were her, what should she do? Obviously she’s shared it on the resident’s WhatsApp. But no replies yet.

Someone clearly doesnt like it so is setting out chocolate to make the dogs poorly?

Not that it would matter a jot with any of the dogs ive owned, they have all had stomachs of steel!

Villanousvillans · 28/03/2026 16:11

Someone doesn’t like dogs. What a nasty piece of work they are.

Lomonald · 28/03/2026 16:14

Someone clearly resents the dogs, people are so strange and vindictive in their hatred of dogs, she can do is keep vigilant and watch her dog doesn't eat anything. My dd and sil lived in a similar sounding flat they used to throw some water and disinfectant over the grassy area every so often to wash their dog pee away.

I was hoping there was a non sinister explanation we hadn’t thought of….

Watch out that they don't escalate to something poisonous.

I can't think of anything I mean if it was a dropped in a wrapper it might have fallen out of a pocket but by your description it sounds like it was placed. It is good your Dd has put it in the WhatsApp though.

They already have! Chocolate is very toxic to dogs.
What a horrible person to do this.

ginasevern · 28/03/2026 17:53

Yes, tell your dd to watch out. This is definitely vindictive. Someone in our city has been leaving poisonous sausages scattered around.

Wolfiefan · 28/03/2026 17:55

I would imagine other residents are fed up of the area being made stinky by dog wee. A horrid thing to do but time to make those walks elsewhere.

This.
The patch of grass must stink to high heaven. Letting your dogs pee there every day is grim. Stop it.

stichguru · 28/03/2026 18:17

Horrible to try to poison innocent dogs, but honestly a small patch grass with wees from 3 dogs on twice a day would stink. Someone who has to walk past the patch everyday is probably fed up of the rank smell caused by the habits of the dog walkers. Your daughter needs to chose different grass each day, making sure the patches are large and the dog pees nice and far from houses so the pee doesn't build up, and people don't smell it from walking past on a road etc.

DoYouWantHalfThisSandwich · 28/03/2026 18:36

Sorry @CurlewKate but I don’t think there is an innocent explanation for this. It seems someone local has taken an intense dislike to your DD, her dog, & the other dogs & owners. Using dark chocolate is extremely malicious IMO given the harm it can & will cause to dogs. Not just the risk of death, but also the vet bills that would be incurred. Absolutely heartless behaviour. DD needs to keep her guard up going forward, may be even put posters up warning the other dog owners of the incident?

I've also heard of people stuffing sausages with slug pellets.

CurlewKate · 28/03/2026 20:11

Nobody walks past it-it’s in a corner. Of an area that reeks of diesel and exhaust. The nearest other green space is 20 minutes walk away. They chuck a bucket of water over it regularly . And surely you’d complain on the block WhatsApp or directly to the landlords before you went for poisoning the dogs?

Still unacceptable though. Whilst I wouldn’t try to poison the dogs I’d be pretty bloody furious.

I feel a need for a diagram to illustrate how out of the way this patch is. And I tend towards the anti dog tendency! Surely if you were bothered you would have said something on th WhatsApp group? Or complained to the landlord?

wracky · 28/03/2026 20:46

There's always a chance of an innocent explanation I suppose but even if your DD thinks there is, she needs to act defensively in case there's not.

If it was deliberate, they've been very clever in not complaining first because it makes them so much harder to track down. If they have any sense at all they will stay anonymous now, and your DD will never be sure who did it or whether they will ever do it again in future. It's quite a deterrent.

You seem sure no one has complained to the landlord so presumably she has already asked them about any complaints explicitly, but if she hasn't done so yet, she should.

Wolfiefan · 28/03/2026 20:48

I love dogs and wouldn’t poison them. But dog pee and poo stink. It may be in a corner but the stink will spread. They chose to get dogs while living in a flat. If it’s 20 minutes walk to the green space then that’s what they have to do.

Yeah it is sounds more than likely some weirdo has taken exception to the dogs sadly. It is a waste ground not someone's garden.

We need a diagramme!
