Are all microwaves like this?

We bought a new microwave oven last year - at the cheap end of the JL range. It does the job, but the turntable is incredibly needy. I need to reposition it seemingly every time I use it, and trying to centre the glass plate onto the circular wheel thing and the centre widget is challenging. Is this typical of all microwaves??

No, not my experience. I wonder if some part of it is faulty?

sallymonella · 28/03/2026 14:52

No, I don't have this problem.

Walksspecial · 28/03/2026 14:52

Yes!!!! Every single bloody microwave I have ever owned

Our bosch doesn't have a turn table at all.

Is something getting caught in the track which is lifting it out? Dried food?

goudacheese · 28/03/2026 14:59

My previous one was like this. It was quite small and lightweight. My new one is bigger and heavier and the turntable is fine but it steams up which is annoying.

The inside has started to go rusty, so I do wonder. Thanks.

I may look at Bosch microwaves when I replace it (the inside is going rusty as well as turntable issues).

I have a very cheap microwave - turntable is fine but it takes AGES to do its job.

BurntBroccoli · 28/03/2026 15:06

No mine is a rock! Very heavy plate that doesn’t move. Nice and big too.

I always keep the door open slightly after cooking to allow the steam to escape. A quick wipe will also keep it rust free.

Honestly, get one without a plate... Game changer!

Talipesmum · 28/03/2026 15:22

Ours is a Russell Hobbs flatbed one (no turntable). It’s great. So much easier than turntable ones! You can put large rectangular dish in there and no worries about it not being able to rotate. And way easier to clean.

BertieBotts · 28/03/2026 17:29

If it's rusty inside I would replace ASAP, our old one was like this and it started to spark as the metal of the casing was exposed by the rust.

Get one which is easy to clean so it doesn't get rusty. Where I live (not UK) apparently the default microwave is one with a grill element inside it which I found the most annoying and irritating thing to clean ever because bits of exploded microwave food would meld themselves on the inaccessible part of the grill. Hated it and bought the cheapest possible one I could find without one. This one is better, but the turntable is shit as you describe, and it steams up terribly so has to be wiped out any time you microwave anything which releases steam. Still, at least this frequent wiping out sort of cleans it??

Yes every one I have owned and ones at work too.

elliesmummy19 · 28/03/2026 21:23

Ours did that. The sound drove me bonkers. It was a cheap Curry’s one. Never changed it because it did the job.

We’ve just got a new kitchen with a fancy pants built in microwave with no plate. I am now living a life of luxury that I didn’t know existed! No more noises!

Walksspecial · 29/03/2026 07:27

Ok I’m going to upgrade my microwave. Those who have ones without plates… any recommendations? Thanks

EBearhug · 29/03/2026 07:35

Mine is about 20 years old and cheap, and it's still working fine.

Ours is a Russell Hobbs one, but they don’t sell that model any more. It’s pretty basic re functions, but works well - we never used any of the fancier settings anyway!
