Passport expiry question

Right, I was so confident in working out my passports validity but had a very odd dream last night and need to check!

I travel to Spain on 11 April, return on 18th April. My passport was issued on 25 September 2016 and expires on 25 September 2026. That's all ok with Spain's entry rules isn't it?

I thought that you needed 9 months ‘free’ before the expiry date?

Yes, there is over 3 months left. I’m assuming by the expiry date that no extra months were added from your last passport. It’s 3 months in the Schengen area.

Oh! Maybe this is where I'm getting confused? I thought it was three months after departure so if I have proof of return flight on 18th April would that be ok?
