Do you like a scatter cushion?

I'm not good at adding the finishing touches to a room. My decorating style is "functional". Once a space has what it needs to make it livable, it's done.

My living room though is particularly bland, so just for fun I asked Chat GPT to "dress it" for me.

The pictures it has produced do look lovely, a transformation, and basically consist of bigger pictures on the walls, candles, lamps, plants and cushions. Lots and lots of cushions.

I already have enough cusions to make the sofas comfy, don't more get in the way?

No! They serve no useful purpose and are not comfortable in any way.

Neither use nor ornament as they say in Yorkshire.

No I loathe cushions. They fill the space and gather dust.
My pet hate in holiday rentals and hotels are the cushions. Cushions piled on the bed so you have to throw them off and find a space to store them until you leave. I'm pretty sure they don't get washed between guests, even worse if it's "pet friendly".
Just clutter. I'm with you OP, functional is enough.

Useful cushions, yes. Just for show, no.

Haha. I’m the opposite. I think they make a room look cosier but I hate sitting on them. I chuck them on the floor.

Yes - I am short of leg and having my feet dangling isn't comfy.

Our room looks better with cushions but everyone throws them off their chair when sitting down then argues about where they should go 😅

damelza · 28/03/2026 12:22

On the sofa (to be kicked off when sitting down ha ha) yes. NEVER on the bed. Ever.

And according to another thread about hiding places for money/valuables, apparently inside a cushion cover with zip is popular, so dual purpose!

Cushions aren’t going to transform a space on their own, though, and if you don’t like them, and want your space functional, just choose better lighting and more interesting ‘basics’ with different textures and colours.
