If you have asthma, does it worsen during hay-fever season?

If you have asthma, does it get worse in hay-fever season?

I have a cat with asthma and she's been a bit unstable and I was wondering if it's due to tree pollen. I'm not too worried as I have some oral steroids in if her inhaler isn't enough.

Yes, allergies are what triggers my asthma

Ah, okay. I think it happened last year too. I'm giving her extra puffs of her steroid inhaler.

No, but my allergens are cats and horses in the main. I don't really get hay-fever.

Yes, for both my dc and my bff.

Your cat would benefit from antihistamines. Vet can advise.

Mine goes a lot worse - I am allergic to tree pollen so this is the worst time for me

Yes definitely. My inhaler usage is much higher between March and June. The worst days are damp days after a couple of sunny ones. The tree pollen especially seems to be sent down with the rain after it's been released into the atmosphere.

I was just wondering if cats can have antihistamines. I think I'll make a vets appointment. She's usually okay, but is getting older.

Yes definitely.

I take daily antihistamines in the summer

begonefoulclutter · 27/03/2026 17:58

Funnily enough, I don't get asthma during hay fever season - it goes away and is replaced by the hay fever. Weird.

24Dogcuddler · 27/03/2026 18:00

My asthma nurse advised me to take an antihistamine daily from April to September.

Amsylou · 27/03/2026 18:08

Yes yes and yes. It’s the worst and I’ve found that if I don’t take very strong antihistamine a few weeks before tree pollen season starts I have all sorts of issues with my breathing and my chest. It was the start of a domino effect three years ago that led to me getting pneumonia. I’ve already had bronchitis and antibiotics this year shortly after the start of the season. It’s so rubbish
