I’m going to Australia this weekend and I’m so excited but nobody to share with!

I’m travelling alone. Mid 50s. Single. Adult kids could not care less!

but I’m so excited now my annual leave has begun!

I’ve booked a lounge at the airport and preordered duty free. I’m flying Qantas PE from LHR - picked up some jargon.

dont think I’ve missed anything but who knows

sooooo excited!!!!

You'll have a brilliant time. I came 15 years ago, and never went home again (Sydney).

Australia has countless fantastic independent cafes. On your quiet days just find a neighbourhood cafe for brunch an coffee and enjoy the vibes and sunshine. It's so relaxing.

Have a wonderful time and please keep us updated on your trip

LeftieRightsHoarder · 28/03/2026 00:58

Have a fabulous time, OP! It’s generally a safe and good-natured place. Same as anywhere in the world, people like you if you say how much you like their country.

I bought some of my favourite summer clothes in Australian ‘op shops’ (secondhand or charity shops), and there may also be plenty in sales as they’re heading towards winter now.

DulciUke · 28/03/2026 01:06

It sounds great! I enjoy photography, and Australia would be my idea of paradise. The wildlife, the birds, the beaches… Congrats!

Sbmpp · 28/03/2026 03:47

@superexcitedaboutit It’s my dream vacation (minus the killer spiders, snakes, sea life and sun 😝). I hope you have a wonderful time. I am so excited for you 🏝️!

superexcitedaboutit · 28/03/2026 03:50

thank you so much, everyone for sharing my excitement!

I’m at the airport hotel and I can’t sleep. I’m excited 🤪🤪

How exciting for you! Have a wonderful time, make the most of every moment.

Ophir · 28/03/2026 04:33

This is very exciting! Airports and flights solo are so much more relaxing too.

Have a brilliant time

How fabulous!
I went last year, travelled alone too! I too booked a lounge but the food was such a disappointment lol
i did Melb and Sydney
if you’re remotely into Uggs, go to an outlet. I spent about £400 (I know) but came back with 7 varying boots and some slippers lol Lifetime supply
Go into Country Road and check out their clothes and sizing. I totally fell for their style for my age, late 50’s and have been snapping up £100 dress for under £10 on Vinted
Bondi and Manly beach are iconic, have a drink in the club overlooking Bondi, but mind the step in the bar area 🤦🏼‍♀️. I was black and blue …
I felt so safe, the restaurants were reasonable in the harbour in Sydney and seeing the opera house is just 👌🏼
the tipping culture is a shock. They don’t !! But service is great
im hoping to half retire there as my Dd is in love with an Aussie

honestly, I felt so safe and welcomed
The wildlife… just mind blowing
the entire trip was just fascinating from beginning to end.
please keep us updated!!
ps buy extra luggage for on the way back lol

Safe travels @superexcitedaboutit and do upload some pics to the thread.

I second the above comments about Sydney beaches, esp Manly, but also the coast south of Bondi, the Bondi to Coogee walk is gorgeous. We also did an Opera House tour. You can while away many hours on boat trips in Sydney harbour, it is such a Fab place.

How exciting OP! Have a fabulous time and keep us updated. I’d love to do this.

This. I’ve always liked flying on my own. I just take several books with me to read (well, I use the Kindle app now), and I’m completely happy.

And wow, I really wish I was going to Australia, it’s a great place and I have relatives who live there.

Have a great time, OP.

deeahgwitch · 28/03/2026 08:49

You lucky thing @superexcitedaboutit!!!
I’ve never been to Australia but do hope to visit in the not too distant future 🤞
Have a wonderful time. I’ll be watching this thread and looking forward to reading about your trip. 💐

Hope the flight is going ok.....I have just cracked and rebooked on QF10 for Fri with my 4 yr old (so be grateful you are not on my flight!)

I’m excited for you. I love flying long haul solo - having someone bring you food and drink and having entertainment on tap! One top tip - get some dioralyte and have one sachet on take off, one half way though and one before arrival. It really helps with avoiding dehydration and helps with the jet lag. Have fun!

This is good advice for long haul flights. Just wondering if you've ever tried Humantra instead of dioralyte though? It's soo much tastier!

4 year olds are great to fly with. As long as she's not completely ferral! Old enough to watch a kids movie together, play games...

and of course have fun on holiday!!

Enjoy every minute! I have family there and absolutely love it. If it wasn’t so bloomin far away from my YA kids I’d have thought about it as my post 50s place to go.

Stickytoffeetartt · 29/03/2026 20:38

Glad you got there in one piece OP! Have a wonderful time 🥰 Hope the weather is good!

superexcitedaboutit · 14/04/2026 08:21

Ive loved every single second. Meeting the Aussie branch of the extended family, huge parties, beach trips, city strolling, Sydney was incredible. I don’t want to go home!!
