In your child’s class, how many siblings do most children have?

Based on something I read about how the birth rate crunch is actually a lot to do with smaller families not childfree people:

In your child's class what's the main number of siblings? I totted up for my reception child and it was about 22 kids were one of two, 3 only children and 5 as one of 3. Having two kids seems very much the norm. Obviously it's reception so there could be more siblings later. We are home counties, reasonably affluent.

There is no way I have capacity in my brain to remember, or indeed the interest or desire to find out, how many siblings the other 24 or so dc in each of their classes had

I don’t think anyone’s really setting out to remember because they find it interesting, as the quoted post seems to suggest. Your brain does just retain pieces of information. I remember birthdays of people who aren’t really important to me, middle names, and yes, siblings. No one is sitting down and making lists or spreadsheets Hmm

Yes agree. Unless your child has just joined the school or you are entirely oblivious to your surroundings, you tend to notice that Freddie's mum is pregnant and later has a baby that grows into a toddler; that parents are picking up multiple children from the school; that some children are picked up by older siblings; that some parents when talking about secondary schools mention they already have a child at the x school.

Of course this isn't foolproof. I assumed "Katy" was an only child until I bumped into her in the card shop with her mum buying a "Happy birthday brother" card (for a brother in their 20s). But it will give you an idea.

I agree that one was odd - hence the laughing emoji.

But, I've had 3 dc go through Primary school.
I've also WOTH (part time, so I was at school twice a week, but not every day). I can tell you what siblings each of the close friends of my dc have (if they are similar age so would be about at school pick up and possibly also at Brownies or Cubs with them, or if a baby when our dc were little, as would obviously be there with the parent) BUT the OP is talking about a whole class. There is no way I have capacity in my brain to remember, or indeed the interest or desire to find out, how many siblings the other 24 or so dc in each of their classes had.

I work full time but in my area it’s common to have all class parties in reception, attended by parents (and often siblings), so I’ve got to know most families in both kids classes over the years. Once you’ve chatted at a party you see them again at drop off, the next party, play dates etc etc.

So no, I’m not making lists or actively trying to remember but I do have a general sense of the make up of most families. Also helped by the fact that the vast majority of DC1’s friends have a sibling the same age as my DC2, so there is a huge overlap.

In our class, there are seven only children and seven with two or more siblings...so around have have one sibling.

Caspianberg · 26/03/2026 16:15

I would say it’s pretty even of only children or 1 sibling. ( out of around 65 children)

I only know of one family locally that has 3,
and they are American.

My answer was approximate too as I couldn't remember the exact details of every family. There's a lot of families with a child in both of my kids classes which helps a bit though.

Ponderingwindow · 26/03/2026 16:34

single children or one sibling. I’m not aware of any larger families, but they probably do exist in the class.

Nursemumma92 · 26/03/2026 16:37

My DD is in year 3, there is one only child, vast majority have 1 sibling, a few have 2 siblings and 1 has 3 siblings but I couldn't give exact numbers.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 26/03/2026 16:39

In my daughters year group there are 4 onlies, 1 has 3 siblings, 1 has 2 siblings, the rest are one of two. Thats a year 5 class.
