Hotel gift card - worth buying?

I was thinking of getting a hotel gift card for my ds - he's on the spectrum but is trying to get more independent and explore the country a bit. But some of the reviews are dreadful, and apparently they're not good value (hotel prices are more when using them). Has anyone here had any experience of them, good or bad?

I had one (I think from Virgin - you could use it at loads of independent and chain hotels).

Unfortunately it was sooooool hard to use. You had to look up the hotels you could use it at on their website, but then they all had restrictions on when it could be used (some of them really restrictive, like only on Tuesday nights or something). And you could only find that out by contacting the hotel direct.

We had particular dates we wanted to go away, but it was basically useless for that unless you were happy to spend days searching and weren’t fussy about where you went.

We swapped it for the equip at cost of Gusto boxes in the end as it was so frustrating.

It was a nice thought but a really shit present. Avoid!
