What to watch after 'The Other Bennet Sister'....

I've been watching this over the last couple of weeks and am totally enamoured by it. I love the costumes, the period, the championing of the underdog and just the sweetness of escapism it brings from the real world, I guess.

I don't watch a great deal of TV, just a handful of shows that DH and I share an interest in. DH loves motorsport and motors, and I do a craft during my spare time, so it suits me just fine for him to watch his car porn, while I craft.

I have never watched anything of a similar genre to The Other Bennet Sister, so now I'm wondering, should I be watching Pride & Prejudice, Downton Abbey, Bridgerton etc? Have I been missing out all these years?

What else should I look up that is similar to this lovely programme?

Bridgeton on Netflix, Bella on Disney+ and not of the same time , but I also loved Lesson in chemistry prime / Apple TV

I loved the original Upstairs Downstairs and I recently came across the newer version with Keeley Hawes and Tom Stoppard. Apparently it was first screened in 2010 so I don’t know how I missed it! It’s set in the 1930s and is available to watch on U.

Sanditon I think has a similar feel and has a few seasons to watch

I really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure I would as she never actually finished that novel but it seemed to work well.

Emma with Johnny Lee Miller (phwoar!)
😂🥰

They've already been mentioned, but both Cranford and Larkrise to Candleford have the innocence and sweetness along with great characters that you might be looking for. And with great actors in both series you can't go wrong. I'm just not sure if you can still find them on iPlayer?

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 24/03/2026 22:45

The BBC adaptation of Emma with Romola Garai is brilliant. I also like the Northanger Abbey film with Felicity Jones.

Three is out and four will be later this year or next year. Series three was the best by miles.

Oh yes, you are right!

I would definitely recommend the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility (the Emma Thompson film and the TV version). I'm also a fan of North and South, different era but such a good period drama, and Downton Abbey and Bridgerton are enjoyable too!

I was coming on to say all of these. Also Cranford if you can find it anywhere, and I’m a big fan of Lark Rise to Candleford.
I also like The Gilded Age.

piscofrisco · 25/03/2026 08:50

Totally different time period but Home Fires….in still annoyed that they only made two series.

Jagsy · 25/03/2026 08:52

I love downtown abbey and Poldark, my go to when I’m in need of a pick me up

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 25/03/2026 08:55

Another vote for Harlots. Uncomfortable viewing at times, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The costumes are incredible.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 25/03/2026 09:01

BBC’s adaptation of Les Mis is excellent.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 26/03/2026 08:36

I’ve just remembered watching The Buccaneers with my mum back in the 90s. Apparently there’s a new version but that might be of interest to folks too.

Stressybetty · 29/03/2026 22:42

Just watched the rest of The other Bennett sister, really enjoyed it

WateringCans · 29/03/2026 22:47

A room with a view (1985 film adaptation) is great

Honestyboxy · 29/03/2026 22:50

I loved this series. It’s so rare to find a well acted, touching and thoughtful adaptation like this. Not salacious , not sensationalist, just moving and well written and acted.

Ladybird69 · 08/04/2026 22:14

@ICanLiveWithIt Ooh lucky you x

Sunloungerhogger · 08/04/2026 22:39

Yes to all of those suggestions and especially also to Poldark and Peaky Blinders (as pp have said though, Peaky Blinders in particular is a very different vibe).

bridgerton - I initially thought nope, too OTT etc, but then I decided it take it for what it is - ie, NOT serious - and jolly fun (and steamy!) it is too.

North and South - gorgeous dramatic and moving.

‘proper’ Pride and Prejudice I.e Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth series for BBC - well, that almost goes without saying.

Call the Midwife? - also a very different vibe of course, but a gentle moving period drama - and also with loads of series to binge should you enjoy it.
