What to watch after 'The Other Bennet Sister'....

I've been watching this over the last couple of weeks and am totally enamoured by it. I love the costumes, the period, the championing of the underdog and just the sweetness of escapism it brings from the real world, I guess.

I don't watch a great deal of TV, just a handful of shows that DH and I share an interest in. DH loves motorsport and motors, and I do a craft during my spare time, so it suits me just fine for him to watch his car porn, while I craft.

I have never watched anything of a similar genre to The Other Bennet Sister, so now I'm wondering, should I be watching Pride & Prejudice, Downton Abbey, Bridgerton etc? Have I been missing out all these years?

What else should I look up that is similar to this lovely programme?

1995 Pride and Prejudice is on BBC iplayer and is my go to watch whenever I need a pick me up.

lost in austen is on amazon prime.

If you haven’t watched Bridgerton - from the beginning, of course - you really should. It’s a cultural phenomenon and a common reference point in conversation. Also beautiful, revolutionary and fun to watch!

I would definitely recommend the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility (the Emma Thompson film and the TV version). I'm also a fan of North and South, different era but such a good period drama, and Downton Abbey and Bridgerton are enjoyable too!

Blueuggboots · 23/03/2026 13:39

I found Bridgerton quite an assault on the senses initially. It’s very brash. But I got over myself and now love it. The spin off series about Queen Charlotte is great too.

ICanLiveWithIt · 23/03/2026 13:53

Don't forget Pride, prejudice and zombies 🤣

The 1995 pride and prejudice is the best, much better than the films. I'm not a fan of Emma or Sense and sensiblity.
Lost in Austin was fun

Downton Abbey is wonderful, Bridgerton is great, beautiful to watch and easy viewing. Also Queen Charlotte

I've also liked:
The BBC mini series of War and Peace
The ITV mini series of Dr Zhivargo
Poldark
The Great
The Tudors
The Paradise
Outlander
Casualty 1909

The other Darcy brother.

In the realm of strong period drama I’d highly recommend:

Mad Men

My Brilliant Friend

Peaky Blinders

You have to watch Downton. It's a whole world in and of itself - and gloriously long so you don't run out of episodes! I think Maggie Smith as old Lady Grantham is probably my favourite series of performances of all time.

I have tried Bridgerton a couple of times as Period Drama is very much my thing but just couldn't get on with it. It felt like period drama produced by people who missed the point for audiences who didn't get the point in the first place. But have been encouraged by this thread as it seems a couple of others have had a bumpy start with Bridgerton but persisted, so maybe I will try again.

If you liked The Other Miss Bennett, I think you would love the suggestion above of Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, obviously you must do the "proper" BBC P and P with Colin Firth, and there is also a relatively recent production of Sanditon which I really enjoyed,

Anyway, any tips for getting along a bit better with Bridgerton appreciated - is it supposed to be tongue in cheek?

My Brilliant Friend I really loved. Very different vibe, but I did enjoy it.

It IS brash. And garish. It's like the costume departments got burned down and they had to use a Disney one.

Stressybetty · 23/03/2026 14:06

Persuasion I think is on iPlayer, the Ciaran Hinds one

NorWouldTilly · 23/03/2026 14:07

Is it supposed to be tongue in cheek?

Why - were you taking it seriously?

😄

I watched about 3 minutes then thought it seemed like an utter piss take so gave up! Wasn't what I was expecting at all ...

Even the costumes looked piss-takey.

ETA the point of Austen humour, for example, was that it was subtle, understated irony, not slapstick! It seems part way to a Catherine Tate show (which in fact I like) but just not as funny. Perhaps it was just not what I was expecting and I should try again. But I was a bit disappointed when I started.

Miss Austen on BBC is lovely fictional story about Jane Austens sister. Also on BBC iplayer is the three part sense and sensibility with Hattie Morahan. Basically I would work your way through the BBC Jane Austen page on iPlayer.

Bridgerton is OK but be prepared for sex scenes and unrealistic regency sets and storylines.

Emma film with Bill Nighy is a lot of fun.

Yes, Miss Austen was great wasn't it. Another good suggestion in the style of The Other Miss Bennett.

I second Ms Austen. Keeley Hawes was great.

Bims2019 · 23/03/2026 14:22

I also really enjoyed Miss Austen, and the recent version of Emma

She is also very good in The Durrells.
Another of my favourite actresses.

TeaandHobnobs · 23/03/2026 14:26

Don’t forget Death comes to Pemberley as well

Movinginthesunlight · 23/03/2026 14:27

Versailles is bloody brilliant!

hahabahbag · 23/03/2026 14:30

More adult, more gritty (it’s about a brothel) but brilliant is Harlots, set at a similar time. I didn’t like downtown abbey or bridgerton myself, they are higher budget but somehow in that looses that charm (and the later is made with a nod to American audiences).

OneBusyFinch · 23/03/2026 14:32

If you haven’t already seen it OP, recommend ‘Upstairs Downstairs’. Made in the 1970’s so will look a bit dated in terms of production values but was groundbreaking and paved the way for the later Downton Abbey. It’s on ITVX

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/03/2026 14:34
