What to watch after 'The Other Bennet Sister'....

I've been watching this over the last couple of weeks and am totally enamoured by it. I love the costumes, the period, the championing of the underdog and just the sweetness of escapism it brings from the real world, I guess.

I don't watch a great deal of TV, just a handful of shows that DH and I share an interest in. DH loves motorsport and motors, and I do a craft during my spare time, so it suits me just fine for him to watch his car porn, while I craft.

I have never watched anything of a similar genre to The Other Bennet Sister, so now I'm wondering, should I be watching Pride & Prejudice, Downton Abbey, Bridgerton etc? Have I been missing out all these years?

What else should I look up that is similar to this lovely programme?

The newer Persuasion - was on Netflix a while ago is very similar. Not quite as serious (or as good) as the one with Ciaran Hinds. The 1995 Pride and prejudice is the best version

JumpLeadsForTwo · 23/03/2026 14:42

Also quite good if you enjoy a historical drama (though different genre) and easy watching series is the Seven dials - the new Agatha Christie on Netflix

CharlotteRumpling · 23/03/2026 14:45

I wonder if the very old "Moll Flanders" is available? Alex Kingston is great in that
For gentle humour, I also enjoy Agatha Christie's Poirot with David Suchet on Netflix.

Definitely Downton, and 1995 pride and prejudice as mentioned.

All Creatures Great and Small has a similar vibe in that it’s gentle and light.

Bridgerton is a slightly different genre but it’s okay.

I LOVED that!

If you haven’t watched Bridgerton - from the beginning, of course - you really should. It’s a cultural phenomenon and a common reference point in conversation. Also beautiful, revolutionary and fun to watch!

I've got these - the shower gel and deodorant in the 'Love & Meadows' scent, does that count? (they smell amazing, by the way!)

In the realm of strong period drama I’d highly recommend:

Mad Men

My Brilliant Friend

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders...that's another one I've often wondered about!

You have to watch Downton. It's a whole world in and of itself - and gloriously long so you don't run out of episodes! I think Maggie Smith as old Lady Grantham is probably my favourite series of performances of all time.

I have tried Bridgerton a couple of times as Period Drama is very much my thing but just couldn't get on with it. It felt like period drama produced by people who missed the point for audiences who didn't get the point in the first place. But have been encouraged by this thread as it seems a couple of others have had a bumpy start with Bridgerton but persisted, so maybe I will try again.

If you liked The Other Miss Bennett, I think you would love the suggestion above of Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, obviously you must do the "proper" BBC P and P with Colin Firth, and there is also a relatively recent production of Sanditon which I really enjoyed,

Anyway, any tips for getting along a bit better with Bridgerton appreciated - is it supposed to be tongue in cheek?

Really interested to read about the false starts with Bridgerton. My lovely friend has recently been bingeing it and said exactly the same, that is was the second season that she really got drawn in.

If you haven’t already seen it OP, recommend ‘Upstairs Downstairs’. Made in the 1970’s so will look a bit dated in terms of production values but was groundbreaking and paved the way for the later Downton Abbey. It’s on ITVX

My Grandma used to have that on when she was looking after me for Mum & Dads weekly skittles night. I guess it must have been on of a Saturday night then? I can still here the theme tune!

The 1970s All Creatures was a family regular when I was growing up - I was madly in love with Tristan Farnon!

I had the good fortune to attend a few of Adjoa Andoh’s workshops during her time as Cameron Mackintish Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford. I would be loath to accuse such an august and skilled actor of indulging in ‘slapstick’ where it was not specifically scripted. And given the amount of academic debate Bridgerton has prompted, it seems worth the effort of persevering - if only so you can form an opinion on it.

Oh that's interesting.

I saw three girls flumping down a staircase complaining of their uncomfortable dresses ( which were only what they would have been accustomed to) then hollering up to her sister to hurry up in a badly modulated chalk-on-blackboard screech which would have been unfeasibly crass even in a modern woman, then the "punchline" seemed to be "Do you think she heard me?" So hilarious.🙄

Totally not the clever humour of Austen! At that point I gave up - so not far in, in fairness.

But perhaps it finds its rhythm as it goes on.

My Brilliant Friend I really loved. Very different vibe, but I did enjoy it.

It’s sooooooo good.

It really is, isn't it.
I also agree with @ForAmusedHazelQuoter that Gilded Age is quite good too. Definitely a different vibe from Downton but I did enjoy it.

I found Bridgerton quite an assault on the senses initially. It’s very brash. But I got over myself and now love it. The spin off series about Queen Charlotte is great too.

Totally agree, both an easy watch.

I found it got better as it went on and the last series was really good.

I really like Meryl Streep's daughter (Louisa Jacobsen?) as an actress. I thought she was excellent. I also really loved Denee Benton in it.

Jackiebrambles · 23/03/2026 16:22

Oh you have to watch Downton abbey. I loved the gilded age too, like downton in the states!

Gilded Age.

Thoroughly unlikeable characters in the latter.
