MUBI?

apeaceful2026 · 22/03/2026 21:20

I've watched quite a few with a Curzon home cinema subscription. It's not cheap compared to prime, Netflix etc, but you can use your credits in the cinema also. :) (but maybe not old like black and white classics, more like going back to the 70s/80s) . Might be worth looking through their library to see if it has what you like.

Rosepalmaviolets · 22/03/2026 21:21

Oh I've not heard of that ! Will look it up thanks

I’ve just had a quick look. I’ve found some on BFI Player, Curzon Home Cinema, Amazon Prime and YouTube. I googled A Bout de Soufflé and La Grande Illusion and L’Atalante to start me off.

Don’t know if that’s any help.

Last year I watched as many foreign Oscar nominated fipms from the last 15 years that I could and thoroughly enjoyed it.

apeaceful2026 · 22/03/2026 22:14

Suddenly feel like we need a foreign film watch along thread!

hahabahbag · 22/03/2026 22:16

Not sure about older films but channel 4 on demand is great for foreign language dramas.

Nitgel · 22/03/2026 22:16

Bfi player is great

Rosepalmaviolets · 23/03/2026 20:11

@apeaceful2026 yes !

@tobee I found some scattered around also but am looking for a proper place with loads in one place.

Mubi has a seven day free trial and that looks promising.

I joined bfi last year and they were good but I didn't see the proper old classic french films.

Yes I understand. I was surprised how many came up on Amazon Prime when I think of it as mainstream

EleanorMc67 · 24/03/2026 01:57

The above shows all the codes you can use on Netflix to search for specific types of films - it's really useful.

The other streaming service that should have lots of older foreign films is Criterion. And if you're specifically looking for old French films, there are loads free to watch on Arte.

I would really recommend the JustWatch app. It will tell you where anything you want to see is available.

Rosepalmaviolets · 24/03/2026 16:22

@EleanorMc67 thanks. How do I get Arte?

This is so helpful, thank you. I normally find stuff by reading through Reddit posts or googling best films about poverty, Russian films, films about Princesses and so on, so your link is really helpful.

You're welcome. If you download JustWatch (which is free unless you want to pay for extras), & do a search for a film or TV series, it tells you where it can be streamed or bought or watched for free. It's great!!

You do know he's dead ...?!!! 😁

I had a look on JustWatch. Of the top 15 best Delon films on ScreenRant, you can see 10 of them.

Two you can watch for free:

  • No Way Out (aka Tony Arzenta) - on Tubi (a free streaming service, just download onto your TV)
  • Zorro - on Plex or WAFree (also free, just download), & also Prime if you have it.

Four you can watch if you have certain streaming services already:

  • Le Samourai - on Prime
  • The Swimming Pool - on Prime & BFI
  • Rocco & his Brothers - on BFI
  • The Eclipse - on BFI (or you can rent for £3.49 on Prime/Apple)

And a final four you have to rent:

  • Purple Noon - £3.49 on Prime/Apple
  • The Leopard - £3.49 on Apple/YouTube
  • Borsalino - £3.49 on Prime/Apple
  • The Sicilian Clan - £3.49 on Prime/Apple/YouTube

That should keep you going for a bit, @Rosepalmaviolets 😁

EleanorMc67 · 24/03/2026 20:34

You'll be surprised, if you download other free streaming services than just ITV, All4 etc, just how much there is out there for free. Unlike Prime, Apple etc there are lots of services where you can sign up for free. With some, everything is free to watch( though if you want to watch things ad-free you can pay to do so. Some of them have some free stuff & lots to rent, but it's still free to subscribe to them.

You should download Tubi, Plex, YouTube, WAFree, Arte & Rakuten, off the top of my head.

And if you use the JustWatch app, it will tell you what films/TV series etc are on what channels.

Rosepalmaviolets · 25/03/2026 09:29

Have you tried the customers who watched this also watched such and such option on Prime?

Rosepalmaviolets · 26/03/2026 07:51

@ForAmusedHazelQuoter yes I have .

But it's limited because they are all scattered.
For instance I would have thought Amazon prime for the French market would have loads of frenxh films etc
