Could get complicated...so I will bullet point it .

  1. cooked a whole chicken .(With plans for it later )

  2. came down poorly and was not in the mood to do the batch cooking I had planned .

  3. cut and divided it up into freezer bags and put it in the freezer.

  4. took out of freezer and left in fridge overnight (now time ) to do something today .

  5. got distracted...going to do number 4 tomorrow.

Big question...

Can I make things with the chicken....and then re freeze it all ??

Chicken will have been cooked again .

( Think soup/stew sort of batches.)

Ohh...it is to feed an 87 year old lady !! ...
So don't want to get it wrong 🤣.

Thank you .

So it will be a :
Cooked and frozen

Reheated and frozen (turned into something else )

Reheated and eaten

I think ???

I'm afraid you can't- if you froze it cooked, you can't then re- freeze it once it's thawed. I once went out with a chef who imparted his knowledge but happy to be corrected! 😊

PS if you'd frozen a raw chicken then defrosted and cooked, you could have then re- frozen it.

No can do

Ohpleeeease · 21/03/2026 17:29

It’s probably the same as buying ready cooked chicken, using it to prepare a meal
and then freezing it for later. I bet it’s fine. But I am a vegetarian so don’t listen to me.

@70sGreenGoblin ..I had a feeling that was correct !
It was at the back of my little brain cell 😅.

I was just hoping to be proved wrong !

Ah well ...lesson learned .

Plan better in the future !

Cook and use fresh /not frozen chicken for batch cook.

Could I have left it in the fridge for a few days ...then prepped everything and froze it ...to then be re heated ??

I'm generally fairly lax about 'some' cookery things, but no, I wouldn't then re-freeze it again.

Can you not make something with the defrosted, cooked chicken and if you have excess, share it with the 87yr old or family?

bizzey · 21/03/2026 17:33

No ...anything I do now will still have to be re heated .

Not worth the risk for a £4.50 chicken !

Oh bless you, it's funny because my old Ma is convinced you cannot freeze cooked chicken!
Oh yes, if you'd left the fresh chuck in the fridge, as long as it was still in date you could cook your recipe and freeze it.
I guess the rule of thumb is just do everything once- freeze raw once, freeze cooked once x

70sGreenGoblin · 21/03/2026 18:13

PS if you meant, freeze raw, defrost, leave in fridge then cook and freeze, that would be OK too. Just ensure that if you froze one that had to be eaten in 3 days, you don't leave it in the fridge for longer than 3 days. Give it a good old sniff too as poultry seems to 'turn' quickly.
