Why do people reject Islam?

Just curious really. A lovely colleague of mine used to be a Muslim but was quite vocal in telling us she was no longer a Muslim. It was a clear, decisive rejection of the religion and not just a lapse of faith.

Has anyone done similar, I'd love to know your reasons.

There were many Muslim girls at my school, some of whom had massively restricted prospects in life. One girl (who was a bit wild) told us she was worried that she was going to be forced into an arranged marriage. She just didn't come back one day, she was under 16.

Things do seem to have moved on since then though but there still seems to be huge variation.

I wonder a bit if it is rather an “all or nothing” religion. I know many lapsed Catholics and areligious Jews but I only know a couple of guys who grew up Muslim but will go for a pint (say).

ThreadneedleRoad · 21/03/2026 09:54

For the same reason people ‘reject’ any religion, surely?

YesssSpringHasSprung · 21/03/2026 09:55

Also lots of people love Islam op.
Also lots of people reject christianity and judaism.
Some people reject all religion.
Why are you picking on Islam I wonder 🙄🙄🙄

Probably as many and for the same reasons people give up other religions.

There’s a poster outside the mosque in my local high street that advertises classes for kids - it has a photo of the classroom from behind with boys sitting at the front & girls, all in hijab but some also obviously with veils tied round the lower halves of their faces, several rows back.

I don’t like this. If it’s a question of keeping the sexes separate they ought to alternate, but I bet they don’t.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/03/2026 09:58

I reject and condemn all male centered religions, none of them improve the safety and equality of women.

Suedoh · 21/03/2026 09:59

Most religions use it as a form of control

BollyMolly · 21/03/2026 10:00

Probably for the same variety of reasons that people reject Judaism, Christianity and any other religion they could have been born into.

Weird question.

I've met quite a few Muslims who drink. Some who also do Ramadan. It's a spectrum just like any other religion.

It is a very male orientated religion where women are kept at home and out of sight much of the time and have limited options. Despite being a relatively new religion (compared to others) it has struggled to adapt with the times re what women want and expect in non muslim countries. Women's lives may have moved along in terms of acceptance in non muslim countries but back in a Muslim country they are still very conservative and look down on any changes to what they deem as acceptable.

Similar to the Catholic and Protestant churches they also have the same issues with the two different fractions of sunni vs shia.

JellyCatsOnToast · 21/03/2026 10:12

I don't get what exactly you’re wondering about. You mentioned a girl fearing forced marriage and another who doesn’t believe in it.

Like what is the question?

Screamingabdabz · 21/03/2026 10:13

The better and more interesting question is why don’t more people reject Islam?

Holdmybeermoment · 21/03/2026 10:15

My boyfriend was raised catholic. He isn’t catholic anymore. Quite abhors the Catholic Church actually, given how bigoted and amoral they are. Should we have a thread about that as well? Or just Islam?

PenelopeAsks · 21/03/2026 10:15

They wake up and see religion (any religion ) for what it is.

Key word here is ‘guys’.

Oh dear. It obviously depends on the family. Plenty of Muslim women work.

PennySweeet · 21/03/2026 10:32

Well what were her reasons OP?

Bit odd to leave this out of your post?

LadyEnemy · 21/03/2026 10:41

Leaving Islam is very very difficult. I have many friends who secretly told me they did not believe it, but didn’t have the courage to declare it within their family as they would literally be disowned. So they would go along with Ramadan etc. There is also the societal pressure to send your children to the classes.

The problem is they have to accept ALL of the Quoran as the true word of god, even though there’s things in there which are now outdated. They are not allowed to question anything in it and rejecting any part of it condemns you to hell.

It takes a lot of courage to reject Islam, however, it does seem to be a growing movement as people have established support groups to do this. I still don’t personally know anyone who has openly done this yet though.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 21/03/2026 10:46

Repression of women, rejection of pluralism and other western values, terrorism, huge numbers of Muslims coming to the UK and not integrating.

My thoughts exactly. Why do we pander to such a backwards and domineering ideology?

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 21/03/2026 10:52

I was baptised as a baby, and I went to a catholic school, but I don’t follow the religion because I don’t believe in any of it.

landlordhell · 21/03/2026 10:15

Key word here is ‘guys’.

There are lots of denominations of Islam in the same way you get heaps of differing groups that practice Christianity. You have places like Kosovo and Albania where Islam is the dominant religion but they still have a culture of drinking. I went to uni with a girl who partied, wasn’t covered up, went to the Mosque on one particular Friday a month but I can’t remember what denomination it was. Every religion has a more conservative group and one totally opposite. Plenty of Muslim women out there who consider covering up optional and have a more “western” approach to social situations - mainly Balkans, the ‘stans’, Indian Muslim populations.
