Coving - cowboy decorators what do I do?!

I am so frustrated and upset! I wanted to put coving in our bedroom, bought £200 worth of coving and tools, gave it a go but we were struggling with the angles and didn’t want to waste lots of it trying to cut it. I found a home and garden improvements company on our community Facebook page that had good reviews and had commented on previous posts saying they could fit coving. I sent photos and links to the coving I’d bought. All fine, they quoted £450 to fit the coving and also to paint the coving, skirting boards, door frames. This felt like quite a lot but we can’t sort the rest of the furniture etc. until it’s done and it’s been hanging over us for months, they said 3 men would be on the job for potentially 2 days so it seemed a fair price. The messages were polite and professional.

Two men turned up today, no van just dropped off at my door, with a very small amount of kit. Straight away I didn’t get the impression they were very confident. They were here for 5 hours today and came down after about 2 hours to say they couldn’t cut the corners and I would need to buy some pre cut corners. I was working with somebody downstairs and all a bit flustered, said that was okay and to send me the link and I’d buy some tonight for tomorrow. I was a bit annoyed as we could have bought pre cut corners and done it ourselves!!

so they stuck half the coving up leaving a gap in each corner (too big to fill about a pound coin size). Then I had to ask them to leave as I needed to go back on the school run and hadn’t expected it to take so long. They sent me the link, I checked it and it’s for corners that are a different design and 50mm shorter than the coving we have!! Checked with screwfix (where we bought the coving) and they don’t sell any precut corners for that model and neither does anyone else that I can find.

I’ve come home and had chance to look properly at what they’ve done and I’m really upset. They have sellotaped the coving in place, used loads of glue which is all over the freshly painted walls and ceiling. Of course I expected some mess but they hadn’t brought any wipes and said they would bring some tomorrow?! They didn’t ask me if I had any or for any kitchen roll etc. I asked if the walls would need repainting where the glue was and they said yes but your child’s scribbled on one of the walls so you’ll need to repaint anyway!! (This is one scribble that I could wipe off, in a totally different section!!) they also only covered one section of the carpet, haven’t covered my white velvet headboard which now has glue on it :(

Now I don’t know what to do. I don’t want them doing anymore work as they clearly have no idea what they’re doing. Happy to pay them for today’s work just to avoid any upset as they know where I live etc and were here for about 5 hours. They arrived with no ladder or anything, all quite strange.

I called a plasterer nearly in tears who was lovely and said he only fits proper plaster coving so he couldn’t fix the job, I’d have to remove it, buy proper plaster coving and then he would come out and do it. He did say with plaster coving I will need to repaint above and below.

do I get him to come and fit proper coving and buy new coving? Do I take it down and sand off all the glue and repaint? Do I try and fill it/bodge job? I am just so upset I was so looking forward to getting this job ticked off and I’ve gone backwards!! We have 2 young children, work is crazy and have a million other things going on so really didn’t need this :( it looks like the £200ish we’ve already spent on coving is going to be money down the drain!

What they’ve done is worse than an amateur and asking for precut corners is just embarrassing for a “professional” and to be honest I still don’t think they’ll manage to get a good finish.

I would not have them back but I would also refuse to pay them because they've wasted £200 of coving so you're basically quits - plus the damage to your headboard etc. I think they thought they could make some easy money but they're clearly clueless.

If you can afford it, get the professional to come and fit plaster coving. It’ll look 100 times better and its not that much more expensive. If he can source some thats slightly wider than what the cowboys have fitted it might cover the mess they've made on the ceiling and wall.

Please say you haven't paid them? 😔

Woah that's bad. So sorry OP. Like someone else said, do not not have them back and do not pay them, they've already cost you money. If they kick up a fuss tell them if they don't leave you alone you'll post photos of the botch on that community Facebook page.

Take photos for proof then see if you can take it off and remove the any glue before it fully sets?

rubyslippers · 18/03/2026 21:46

That’s dreadful
facebook recs can be very hit and miss with reviews coming from family and phots which aren’t theirs to use
i would ask for any money back that you’ve paid and give them 24 hours and then post the pics in theFB group as a warning to others
that’s an absolute shambles of a job

I’m so upset! It’s really not my area of expertise but I could tell as soon as they left that it just wasn’t right even without the corners being done. DH has just come home and pointed out that it’s the wrong way round too - what should be stuck to the wall is facing outwards!! So no wonder they couldn’t get the corners cut right! So we can’t even get somebody else to come and make good.

We have taken lots of photos and then pulled it down before the adhesive fully sets. We’ve now got huge stripes of glue on the ceiling and wall! But at least it’s off, I think we will get a professional plasterer in to fit some plaster coving.

I just don’t understand why they took the job on and why they didn’t say anything to me when they were here, I’d have much preferred they’d just said it was beyond their skill set!!

I haven’t paid them anything yet. I am a bit wary of not paying anything because they are live very locally to us and they looked a bit shifty, I’m worried we will have people turning up at the house if we don’t do anything so may pay a small amount for their time just for my own peace of mind as frustrating as it is.

I think I could have done as good a job myself 😭

There is no way I would pay. If this were me, I’d be chasing them off my property with a hammer if they tried any sort of threatening behaviour 😂 They’d have to drag the money from my cold, dead hands. Obviously I don’t advise this sort of behaviour, but I also don’t advise paying 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/03/2026 23:25

OP, there are tonnes of vids on YT so you and DH can DIY this.

I have sent a message going over everything that was wrong and asking them not to come back. I have offered a goodwill payment of £50 for the time and for them moving a couple of small bits of furniture before they started the work.

He replied immediately to say that he had “someone who’s done coving before” to come tomorrow and redo it all!!! He then quickly sent another message saying of course they had done coving before but normally it has corner pieces?! Obviously a load of rubbish, I’m so angry with myself for not going with a proper plasterer in the first place!

a very good point about Facebook and people recommending friends/family. I did go back through the reviews and there was one negative one saying they came, did half a bad job and never came back after the lady had already paid. Luckily I haven’t paid a penny yet.

Before I had messaged he’d sent me a message to say we may need to buy more coving as we couldn’t get corners to fit as if the coving was defective and I would be fine spending another £200 on more!!

a painful lesson learned - I will be sticking to check a trader or the federation of master builders going forward I think! It’s the first house we’ve owned so we haven’t really hired tradesmen before.

we did attempt to DIY the coving before and failed miserably!! DP works vv long hours and we have little ones so trying to find the time and childcare to attempt it again seemed more stressful than paying what I thought were professionals!

Don't even pay the £50 goodwill gesture.

Damnloginpopup · 19/03/2026 06:46

They owe you for new coving. Why the fuck would you offer them £50? I wouldn't give them the steam off my piss.,
