2nd day of new job calling in sick ????

I’m mortified. I had bit of cold yesterday, took paracetamol and ibuprofen, went to my first day at new job. You know what it’s like, adrenaline keeps you going, but I came home and felt really really run down. I barely slept at night, because meds didn’t really work. I know it’ll look bad calling in sick on my second day but I’m genuinely ill, my temperature is about 39C, my throat is aching so much, shivers, headache, my face feels really tender to touch on my cheeks like it is with sinusitis. Are they going to think I’m taking the mickey? I was so upbeat yesterday, really enjoyed my first day, I’m gutted today😢

OP I hope you're ok. With the outbreak of meningitis going on, I would be calling 111 and asking for some advice.

How ridiculous of PPs to suggest that someone with a 39 degree temperature, rigors and bedridden drags their self in to work. What good would OP be for one, and secondly she would be infecting everyone else before probably being sent home or making herself significantly worse.

No half decent employer would expect someone to come into work like this - it's very bad timing but you can't control when you're poorly. I'm glad they were understanding, and hopefully you will show them you're a good employee once you can work at your full capacity on your return - when you're well!!

It sounds like a cold. Remember when peole worked
through those?

now we’re all expected to go into isolation with one

Yes, it was always a situation that everyone reasonable knew was not unacceptable, and for some knew it could be very bad one day.

Unfortunately some people don't learn from anything, and keep unevolved ideas of how to behave in society even when something big could final change it for the better.

We can agree to differ, second day of a new job I would have at least gone in for the laptop and offered to work at home, it shows willingness

Send in pictures:
(1) Lying in a heap on the bathroom floor (face down is always effective).
(2) A Close up of your tongue and throat.
(3) Your cat sitting on your face.

Lovely
I guarantee you as an employer, if i got a whiff of "fuck them i need my job" id have u gone by probation. So no job anyway.
No one wants someone who thinks like that.

It's her second day. Trying to pull the 'I could have come in, but I didn't want to spread it round the office' card would make a very bad impression.

The OP doesn't owe the complete strangers in her office a thing. Are they going to have a whip round to pay her rent/mortgage if she loses her job?

LivelyJadeLeader · 18/03/2026 17:52

I’m sorry but since Covid people just think that if they have a cough/cold/temperature/didn’t sleep/broke up with their other half/woke up on the wrong side of the bed that they don’t have to go into work! You need to man up people and realise you have a job to do and especially if it is a desk job sitting on your lazy butts all day! And get on with it!!
You’re not babies so stop behaving like it!

She would lose it anyway if she came in sick as a dog and didnt give a fuck as you say.

Christ, this thread indicates that women worry more about "what other people might think" rather than focusing on practical considerations that really matter 🫣

It’s “hanged drawn and quartered”!

Pictures are hung, people are hanged.

Apologies, but it’s a misquote that drives me mad.

Fair enough! Thank you!! 👍

Or paying the bills. That could be considered a practical consideration that matters?

I doubt people would be responding this way to someone who'd been in the job for 2 months, it's the fact it's day two.

If an employer sacks you for being sick on day 2 you're better off finding another job. Most employers have more sense.

I’m speechless. I’d better not come back to this thread, because some posts are insane. People suggesting me I have a mild cold and that I said I don’t want to spread it around the office🫠

In support of you OP. The only person this will feel huge to is you - your manager won’t dwell too much on it - one of those things. My friend had a MAJOR contract win that was supposed to be a full week delivery this week. Her daughter got some random virus last week, now she has it (rash, temp and all) and has had to miss the whole week. She’s absolutely gutted and it has long term career implications (she contracts in a field where visibility and word of mouth are everything - especially for working women). Nothing she could have done, and nothing you can do either.

TheSunjustcameout · 18/03/2026 18:42

Go to bed early so you can sleep the worse part off.
Get up, have a shower, get some breakfast and head in.
The adrenaline from work should be enough to get you through the day.
The weekend is near.
Hang in until then.

Ignore the performative "toughness", OP. You're contagious, and offices are petri dishes. Infecting colleagues is dangerous and selfish, not heroic. You won't perform well anyway. Day 2 of a job is not the time to set a precedence of self-sacrifice and disregard for public health.

Doing your job properly is not about going through the motions, "virtue" signalling and putting on a show. It's about getting the job done well, and respecting your colleagues. Well done for sticking to a responsible, professional choice. Good managers prefer honesty and reliability, and you are likely to make a swifter recovery this way.

No, Covid broke the stigma around being ill and starting to take illness and not spreading it seriously.

People like you are selfish. I don’t want your germs, your germs could literally kill me. So if you’re ill, even if it’s “just a little cold” and you work in a poorly ventilated office, stay away or work from home. It’s not hard.

incywincyspiders · 18/03/2026 18:47

Ps, the last time someone came into our office with “just a cold”, I ended up with pneumonia. So I’m not exaggerating here.

Sorry to hear that but people with colds are in the office every day of the week.
Many people spread colds without appearing to have one themselves.
That's the reality of colds.
By the time you feel bad enough to go sick the germs have already been shared around the office anyway.

And this is the super selfish behaviour that screws everyone else esp those with people who have issues in their households. The stupidity and selfishness of humanity never ceases to amaze. If you are ill stay home.

This is obviously rage bait so I shouldn't even respond, but lol no. We give our lives to work we won't give our health too. Soz. You can show up every day if you like but they will still drop you at a moments notice if they wanted to.

Such drivil.

They probably expect to be paid and have lunch breaks too.

Outrageous peasants

If you are coming into an office knowing you have a cold, you’re selfish. I said what I said. It’s different if you don’t realise you have one. We actually have rules in place in our office that if you have a cold, you work from home or you work in an isolated office.

Also, my point was it WASN’T just a cold, it’s what this person said to justify coming in with the bloody flu!
