A Rant about my GP

In general my GP practice is great but I just need a rant about a referral. I have a rare genetic condition, even a hospital consultant may only see one or none in their career.

Moved for work a few years ago and been referred back to service where I grew up and they understand the condition.

Again needed a referral and was told no problem. Waiting quite a while. Have now got a letter from my local hospital saying they have the referral and I’ll be contacted by a third party service they are using to get through waiting list. Even if I decide to be treated down here it is unlikely that either, let alone both the doctors I’d see at this private place and the NHS hospital will have seen it before.,

I don’t mind if the GP/local policy has changed about referrals but I need to know
Aarrggh!!!

I completely understand, but why not find out the answers to your question rather than wondering and potentially wasting an appointment with someone who hasn't got a clue?

I'm guessing you were treated in a tertiary centre previously? Might you be able to get hold of the secretary and ask for recommendations/push for a more appropriate referral to a more experienced consultant?

If it is THAT rare, odds are you'll end up seeing your original consultant anyway. I've seen this with rare conditions several times as, like you say, very few people have suitable experience.

Best of luck!
