What celebrity death did you thought it was a hoax when you first heard it

Mine Is Liam Payne I thought it weren’t real when I heard it and I still can’t believe it

Liam Paynes death really affected me too. I get sad every time I think of it or hear one of their One Direction songs.

Cupcakegirl13 · 16/03/2026 14:11

Peaches Geldof was awful.

Princess Diana. Thought my boyfriend (now DH) was playing tricks on me, until I turned on the TV.

twilightcafe · 16/03/2026 14:35

Michael Jackson was the other one.

A friend texted 'Michael Jackson's dead'. I almost replied 'is that the punchline to a joke?'

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/03/2026 14:37

Definitely Princess Diana came from absolutely nowhere

i was upset by the death of Amy Winehouse even though her issues were well documented

KittyHigham · 16/03/2026 14:44

Not a hoax, but the news of Jill Dando's murder seemed unbelievable.

Shootings were rare, and a shooting in broad daylight even more so. Yet, she was gunned down on her doorstep. Tragic.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/03/2026 14:51

I couldn't believe it when Prince died, so soon after David Bowie. It started to feel personal.

mondaytosunday · 16/03/2026 15:04

John Lennon. I happened to be listening to an Abbey Road special on the radio and when they interrupted to announce he’d been shot I thought it was some sort of sick joke, akin to all those ‘Paul is dead’ rumours.

With Diana, when I turned on the radio that Sunday morning and heard sombre music and “news from the palace…” o assumed the Queen Mother until my flatmate came in. He’d been out all night (those were the days!) and had heard as the news broke.

I had not long qualified as a nurse and was still in bed as I was on a late shift yesterday afternoon when mum came into to tell me.

I’ve never thought a death was a hoax!

I was most shocked my Amy Winehouse and Peaches Geldof. I think mainly because I was a young woman in my 20s when they died, and they were a similar age to me.

I was a child when princess Diana died and thought she was fairly old (maybe early 50s). Now that I’m older I’m shocked to realise that she was only 36.

Notascouser1990 · 16/03/2026 16:15

Peaches Geldof was shocking to me because she was only a year older than me and I was part of that whole "indie" scene. Princess Diana I was 6 coming up 7 and didn't find out until I put cartoons on on the Sunday morning and saw an announcement at the bottom of the screen to turn on the news.

MaggieFS · 16/03/2026 16:22

I’m not sure I recall thinking any were a hoax.

My earliest recollection of one which was shocking was River Phoenix. I was in my early teens. He was young. Half my friends had posters of him on their walls torn out of magazine [does that even happen these days?]. Drugs were a mystical thing. And the 911 call recording had been played on the radio and someone managed to record it on a cassette which was then passed around and played on Walkmans. Friends were in tears.

Closest to the bone was Sarah Everard. I lived close to that part of London through my 20s. There but for the grace of God…

MaggieFS · 16/03/2026 16:23

(Sorry, I forgot the the thread was about celebs and my mind wandered).

keepswimming38 · 16/03/2026 16:24

You’ve asked what celebrity death I thought was a hoax- zero. Why would I think that? Which death affected me. That’s a different question- George Michael.

PurpleSky300 · 16/03/2026 16:26

Avicii - only 28 years old, haunting
Robin Williams - I didn't want to believe it
Gary Speed

PurpleSky300 · 16/03/2026 16:29

Nikki Graham - shocking and tragic
Eric Dane, most recently

OsmanthusRose · 16/03/2026 16:33

Princess Diana. I had been out the night before and someone had actually said to me in a bar towards the end of the evening "Princess Diana's been shot" (I mean she wasn't, but he had the right idea) but having consumed rather a lot of booze I instantly forgot this and when I woke up the next morning and a friend who was staying over told me she had died I didn't believe him until I turned on the TV.

lottiegarbanzo · 16/03/2026 16:39

Hoax? Why would you think that? What hoax deaths have you experienced?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/03/2026 16:56

Jeremy Beadle

No way you are getting me with that Game for a Laugh nonsense.
