Abdo Ultrasound for hungry 2 year old! Help?

Just read the leaflet that says we need to fast for 6 hours! After 6 hours of no food my 2 year old will be doing absolutely wild and absolutely will not let anyone near her

So do I do a fast for 2 hours and hope for the best after that (I think that’s all she would manage and still be ok to let them do it)

or do I fast for 6 hours knowing it will be absolutely awful expecting they probably won’t get any images at all

help!

What time is the ultrasound? Is she still allowed fluids but not solids?

Mrspepperpotpot · 15/03/2026 21:15

It’s at 2pm and she can have water or squash (needs a lot of this as it’s to scan kidneys)

Ring the ultrasound dept and ask for advice. They might be able to make the apt first thing in the morning or agree to a shorter fast. Dont just shorten the fast yourself as it could affect the results or make it impossible for them to do it in which case you and your DD would have to go through the whole stress of it again

If she can have fluids you can give her ice lollies which she may see as a special treat? Can you see if there are any morning appointments which will means she is naturally fasted overnight.

This is a great idea I hadn’t even thought of rescheduling to a morning appointment! I will call them first thing! Thank you also for the ice lolly recommendation:)
