Meningitis outbreak

I’m freaking out a bit

DD has been here all day after travelling from uni yesterday. Her housemate is really poorly and now I’ve just seen the news about the meningitis outbreak at her uni.

Her housemate is in the house on her own now - I’ve told DD to call the uni and let them know. Worried that DD has been here with us all day in case she gets sick

It’s a cost versus risk exercise. Babies are the group at greatest risk for Men b then the 15-24 age group. They don’t have enough money to vaccinate all. So went with babies.

Out of interest, why 15-24 and not say, 12-20?

If she had been doing that, what's the huge deal, anyway? Why shouldn't 17yos flirt, for one reason or another?

It's disgusting that a perfectly ordinary night out had to end like this. Our governments need to shoulddr the blame for not giving the vaccine.

What? Of course there’s nothing wrong with flirting, that wasn’t the point the pp was implying the girl got menB from flirting around the older boys to get drinks and drinking from their bottles, when no one has any idea how she got it.

So many teens share their water bottles at school.

@CautiousLurker2completely agree

yet I suppose the sad reality now, is how many of the teenagers terrified and queuing up, would never have been taken anyway because of anti vax parents.

it’s incredibly comforting to see how many teens are there getting the treatment and taking the medical advice.

But I do think the anti vax campaign, particularly since covid will not have helped in catch up doses.

McBuckers · 18/03/2026 21:15

@pteromum MenB vaccines have only been given since 2015. My children had their full schedule of vaccines. MenB was not part of that schedule when they were young.

Absolutely 💯

but how many of the poor teenagers now, had they been offered it (as @CautiousLurker2 said). Would never have got it anyway because of parents.

my point is it’s refreshing to see that the majority are taking the advice now.

McBuckers · 18/03/2026 21:21

@Wipeywipeymaybe Langton Boys is being a bit more cautious because they’ve had a case. No such advice from Langton Girls or Barton Manor.

OhDear111 · 18/03/2026 21:24

@pteromum It started way before that. It was the lies about MMR and autism that started the rot. One big problem is that info about the vaccination has not been sufficiently publicised. At 18, dc can make their own minds up. It’s about time we insisted dc had vaccinations before starting school and university.

McBuckers · 18/03/2026 21:40

The thing I’m finding worrying is there are students at two universities and five schools across Kent and two others (with no school/uni links) with MenB and yet UKHSA say it requires close and prelonged contact to be contracted.

Handeyethingyowl · 18/03/2026 21:41

I don’t think the anti-vax thing applies here as it’s a private vaccine. It wasn’t on my radar and I have accepted all vaccines for mine.

I don’t think they know yet why the spread in this situation was unprecented. I read an update just now saying they are fairly confident it has now been contained. Let’s hope so. Thinking of all those affected.

SharpTooth · 18/03/2026 21:52

But they were at the nightclub the students were at. It’s not just actual students it affects. It’s the age range and associated behaviour that causes the spread. It won’t ignore a 20 year old who works but target one who is studying.

LittleBinChicken · 18/03/2026 20:06

Yeah. It just stirs up some very familiar feelings.

I’m already seeing conspiracy crap on Facebook and twitter 🙄

But when it comes to your kids it’s really not funny.

I was in Canterbury high street late this afternoon and it was so surreal how familiar it all felt. It literally felt like Covid again- so quiet, cafes empty and 10 percent of people wearing masks. I also saw a teenage girl spit on the floor at one point, so I know some people aren't that worried.

Where did you read that please?

McBuckers · 18/03/2026 21:54

I hope so @Handeyethingyowl. My youngest came home from school with a headache today (she doesn’t usually get them) and I immediately started quizzing her about any other symptoms.

Yes - my thoughts are with those who have been affected too.

But we’re being told that transmission takes close and prolonged contact 🤷🏼‍♀️

apeaceful2026 · 18/03/2026 22:04

RollOnSunshine · 18/03/2026 09:25

Because the nightclub itself does not carry the infection. It makes no sense to close the business.

A carrier can pass on the illness in any given location.

Closing that nightclub is no more effective than closing any other nightclub in the area.

Edited

We only have 3 nightclubs here...one is at UKC, which is obviously closed, and the third has cancelled all student events.

@Sisublondie it took me too long to read the sarcasm 😂

The private practice I use for travel vaccs now has a banner on the main website page saying they can not get MenB vaccines

😹😹😹!! Ah, have they? I think they have pretty much gone now! My DS17’s jab did actually happen, but was one of that Boots last ones, and my DS19 in Scotland has already had his on Sunday cancelled.

But these people could have had close and prolonged contact?

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 22:07

@McBuckers agree I hope they get to the bottom of it.
Somerhng very strange going on unless as pp mentioned in France it was boosted by flu and cold so was someone sneezing all over them .

Re containment I don't see how they can possibly know after so many students went home early becsuee it's Easter anyway !!

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 22:09

@Finbeginning close contact In a hot poorly ventilated club can also be replicated on many public transport scenarios and school corridors and so on

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 22:10
