Have you played Boy/Girl

We used to play Boy Gotl lots as kids, I am the undisputed champion and it’s a game I taught my kids. DS brought his girlfriend home from uni this weekend and we discovered she has never played it, my brother has a new girlfriend also who had never played it so now we are wondering if this is something made up in our poor family as an alternative to proper board games!

You each have a piece of paper split into categories such as Boy (name) Girl (name) colour, food, place etc. one player says the alphabet in their head and another player says STOP. Whatever letter the first player was on is the letter for that round and you have to fill in all of the categories and score points for each unique answer and half points for shared answers.

eh A - Alfie, Amy, Aubergine, Apple, America

Yes yes and yes a million times! We played it over and over again growing up, such a fun game, we used to call it “boys and girls”, however I’m going to tell you something I’ve learned as an adult that is going to (hopefully) mystify you… the majority of people call it “Stop the Bus”, like what the hell! So instead of just shouting STOP at the end of the line, they shout STOP THE BUS (hence the name!). So as I’ve spoken to people about it as an adult they have no idea what Boys and Girls is, but Stop the Bus… that one they know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Stop the bus?! What on earth 🤣 ah maybe that’s why no one ever wants to play Boy/Girl.

We had a game this morning, Mother’s Day treat but my kids are loving it and DSs girlfriend had been revising especially!

I know I can’t get my head around it, this name sounds ludicrous to me 😂

Ah I love this though, my little ones are two and 8 months but I can’t wait to play this with them as soon as they’re old enough, I have such fond memories of playing this as a child (and an adult 🤣)

Laiste · 15/03/2026 21:24

Oh!
We call it Vegetable Village Country !
🤣

ScoobyBooby · 15/03/2026 21:28

Oohhh classic childhood game !!

Statsquestion1 · 15/03/2026 21:30

Yes we called it stop the bus. I still play it with my dc. We played it only last week 🙌

beewales · 15/03/2026 22:00

We call it boy, girl, fruit, flower or boy, girl for short 🤣 Great game and we’d add in all sorts of categories. Many hours playing this as a child!

soundsys · 15/03/2026 22:00

We called it Boy Girl Fruit Flower at home but Stop the Bus at school 😁

DameOfThrones · 15/03/2026 22:03

I've never heard of this OP but it sounds like fun so I'm going to play it with my family.

Thanks 😃

Statsquestion1 · 15/03/2026 22:04

There’s an actual board game of this now called “scattegories”.

There’s an actual board game of this now called “scattegories”.

This has been out for years, I played this game as the board game Scattegories as a kid in the 90s

Fingalscave · 15/03/2026 22:07

Yes I loved it. We still play it when all the family gets together, only it's called Scattegories now!
Another one I loved was Consequences, that used to get really funny!

Allbymyself123 · 15/03/2026 22:17

it was “boy, girl, fruit, flower” when i was growing up & only those 4 categories but my kids play it & call it “stop the bus” they add random categories though like place and animal

PurpleDiva22 · 15/03/2026 22:18

Im a teacher and my students all know this game as Stop The Bus and request it's played regularly. It gets too intense though 🤣

blythet · 15/03/2026 22:21

We call it stop the bus too. Once you’ve got an answer in each category you shout “stop the bus” and everyone else has to stop writing. What do you shout when you have all your answers in Boy/Girl

DancinOnTheCeiling · 15/03/2026 22:47

I have friends in Germany, and they call it ‘Stadt, Land, Fluss’ which means city, country, river… same game, and it was good fun (trying to) play it in German 🤣

GoGoSuperBug · 16/03/2026 10:05

Ah now I see where “Stop the bus” comes from! We just say Stop, but we have developed it a bit and give a one minute grace from when the first person finishes (gives youngest DC a bit more chance)

It’s my favourite game! Never heard of Scattergories but all you need is a piece of paper and a pen!
