Ideas for a gentle Beatles-themed countdown to a Liverpool surprise trip

Beatles and 60s music obsessed DD is turning 16 in April, I've booked a trip to Liverpool for her, going on the bus tour and to the cavern club...but it has to be before her actual birthday...she's had a rough few years, isn't in school, has no friends, so I want to do something special for her.
Any ideas for a Beatles themed way of building up to her having the surprise of the trip? Thinking a few days of hints in the form of small presents?

She's super bright and autistic so needs a lead up to things...and I want her to guess or get the information about the trip slowly but a few days before so she gets used to the idea..

Ticket to ride is one thought I had...now I'm out of ideas!

Go take photos around Penny Lane

That's the student area so maybe stop for a macha/pint/latte in a trendy place too

Theghostofchristmasarse · 13/03/2026 19:11

Thanks, definitely will include that, we're going for two nights so should have one whole day and an afternoon to go think...just thinking of ideas to build up to the surprise of going though.

Could do a penny lane present as a hint though, good call!

Print out a picture of a field of strawberries and buy her some strawberries.

Buy her a little octopus and a pot plant for Octopus's garden!

And a walrus cuddly toy!

Also have the Beatles playing more than usual.

Tell her you’re going to see the Yellow Submarine

A calendar with the previous day circled...yesterday

BestIsWest · 13/03/2026 19:32

I was hoping you were my DH posting. It’s my birthday next month and that’s what I’d like.

Meanwhile Fatface have these fab socks (you can get them delivered to Next for collection).

What a lovely surprise for her, and so thoughtful to build up to it. Maybe some kind of word puzzle/crossword/quiz with Beatles related questions but with the answers revealing the surprise? Is this the kind of thing ChatGPT could do if you asked it?

Theghostofchristmasarse · 13/03/2026 19:45

Oh these are all brilliant, thank you!

@BestIsWest show him the OP? Hint hint!

I really hope she likes it. I've made her a necklace for her with her birth flower in a 60s vibe, I feel bad she won't get a big present on her birthday but just want to make as much fuss as she'll allow me to as she's had a really awful couple of years and shed probably rather not celebrate her 16th with her mum and stepdad...

So I'm thinking 5 days starting a week before...

Print a calendar with 'yesterday' circled
A photo of her brothers stuffed octopus in our garden plus a little jellycat octopus maybe
Socks (fab idea! Thanks! ) and strawberries
Maybe a walrus..or a penny lane sign

I might have something for her to open on the train with what I've booked for while we're there too.

helter skelter? Hard days night? Help? Eleanor rigby? crossword is a great shout and it’s such a lovely idea.

if your daughter likes 60s music the ferry across the Mersey is both a clue and an activity - they play the song too if I remember rightly !

Ps the happy quacker is back and puts you near the Albert dock/three graces

I’ve seen a yellow submarine tea infuser, depending on whether or not she drinks brews, hope you all have a great visit!

Theghostofchristmasarse · 13/03/2026 20:44

@SaulGoodmanIsTaken thank you! I think our airbnb is near there so I'll look into it.
She does drink tea, I'll do a search!

I am not sure if the Beatles ever mentioned it, but the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool is really, really impressive. More so than York Minster, IMHO.

Also, the bar at the Philharmonic is really something too

Theghostofchristmasarse · 13/03/2026 21:13

Thanks @canuckup I'll have a look. She does get fatigued really quickly and can't walk far so I'm aiming for a bit of downtime but need to make the most of it too.
I'm getting so excited, I can't wait to tell her!

There’s an advert for board games showing for me halfway up this thread and one of them is Ticket to Ride! Does she like board games games OP?

You could put some arms and legs on her boiled egg at breakfast to make an (I am the) EggMan for breakfast. Maybe serve with a packet of Ringos?

I found this Abbey Road ribbon on Amazon. You could use it to wrap a present maybe. It’s £1.50 a metre which doesn’t seem too bad. Hope the pic doesn’t take long to show.

OP, I'm in Liverpool with a 14 YO Beatles nerd - neurotypical but probably full of ideas. When are you here? Feel free to PM me.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 14/03/2026 00:09

Could you create some AI album covers with her on or something personal to her for example your family on the zebra crossing or that type of thing?

Theghostofchristmasarse · 14/03/2026 00:36

So many lovely responses, thank you! I'll get to looking at everything properly tomorrow but just wanted to say thanks!
