Would you holiday in Cyprus at the moment?

Due to fly for a week at the end of this month. I know the gov advisory is saying precaution and flights are still running to and from the UK as normal but I can't help feeling a bit nervous about it. Just wondered what people's thoughts are about it..

No I wouldn't.

Yiayoula · 12/03/2026 04:50

Yes.

SammyScrounge · 12/03/2026 05:10

No. The events in the middle east are out of control and air strikes seem random and unpredictable. I'd play safe and stay away.

SaltyandSweet · 12/03/2026 05:15

Definitely not. We are in the midst of an escalating war with warships and personnel being deployed to that region. I think things are going to get much worse before they get better and would not risk it. If you do decide to go, check if your travel insurance would be invalidated and register with the foreign office at a minimum.

Frumpitydoo · 12/03/2026 05:39

Not a chance.

gerispringer · 12/03/2026 05:42

I was thinking of a spring break in Cyprus as we love it there, but Im glad I decided against it. Any chance you could change it?

DoloresDelEriba · 12/03/2026 05:42

Nope.

connie26 · 12/03/2026 06:38

Thanks everyone for your views. The travel agent have told us we would lose 90% of the cost of the holiday if we wanted to change it.

There are multiple army and RAF bases on Cyprus and RAF Akrotiri has already been struck by a drone leading to families being temporarily evacuated to another base. While the risk is very low and DH and I normally go to Cyprus every year we’re looking elsewhere this year

Kalimeras · 12/03/2026 06:43

That said - if I had a holiday booked I might still aim to go if you’ll lose all your money. I just wouldn’t book one now

FruAashild · 12/03/2026 06:44

Just keep an eye on what the Foreign Office recommends. It might be all over by then, it might have escalated. If it's all over you'll regret cancelling and losing 90%, if it escalates then the Foreign Office will change the status and you will keep 100%. Or you cancel at the last minute and lose 100% vs 90%. So waiting and seeing is your most sensible financial option right now. Appreciate you might prefer certainty.

PersephoneParlormaid · 12/03/2026 06:46

I think it depends if you can afford to lose the 90% or not. I’d wait and see, a lot can change in 2 weeks.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/03/2026 06:48

I wouldn't book one but I would go in your situation, maybe if it was just the deposit I lost I wouldn't go.

connie26 · 12/03/2026 07:01

Thank you. I'll wait and see.

Yes. There are flights going around that area and people are holidaying in Turkey etc. But if there are still regular flights to Cyprus from all over Europe then there isn't an issue (at the moment)

Passingthrough123 · 12/03/2026 07:37

Where are you meant to be staying? A colleague of mine is there at the moment, staying with family because her father is ill. They're in Limmasol, which is about 27km from the RAF base that got droned and they and the other locals are all prepped and ready to run to shelters at a moment's notice.

connie26 · 12/03/2026 07:45

We're booked to stay in Paphos

The resort by the airport?

I think it would be reasonable to ask your travel agent what provision they are making for holidaymakers they're sending there in the event of the airport being bombed, given Paphos is the same location and only a 45-minute drive from RAF Akrotiri.

I personally wouldn't be risking it. If you were staying at the other end of the island I might think differently.

PituitaryPippa · 12/03/2026 08:23

My son is working in Paphos and says it’s business as usual. Lots of military air traffic but other than that you wouldn’t know anything is going on. I confess I am anxious about him being there and just hope that nothing further happens.

Geobaby · 12/03/2026 16:17

I live in Pafos. Everything is normal here! I didn't even know about the drone 'attack' on Akrotiri until my family in the UK told me about it. We've been told to be vigilant and there's been a practice of the civil defence's texting system. I feel safer here than I would in the UK. There are Greek, French and I think Italian and Spanish naval ships patrolling near Limassol. The weather is glorious and life is still as chilled as normal. Pic of my Sunday stroll at St George's cape.

Bumblemeebee · 12/03/2026 16:39

Yes!! It is business as normal here and safe!! The Republic of Cyprus is not under threat. The SBA bases were. Come and enjoy your holiday.

I totally agree. I live here too, in Pegeia. I'm not concerned and also feel safer here than the UK. To read the UK news you'd think we were constantly under attack with missiles hitting left right and centre, which isn't true.

VictoriaEra · 12/03/2026 16:55

Watching this thread as I have a holiday booked there in may.

Goustooffer · 12/03/2026 16:57

Yes I would
