Would you holiday in Cyprus at the moment?

Due to fly for a week at the end of this month. I know the gov advisory is saying precaution and flights are still running to and from the UK as normal but I can't help feeling a bit nervous about it. Just wondered what people's thoughts are about it..

What does your travel insurance say?

Jok77 · 12/03/2026 19:49

I almost booked a holiday in Paphos for Easter but decided I'd rather not take the chance.

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 12/03/2026 20:33

I am not commenting on whether Cyprus is safe or not, but I dont think the money involved should be a factor in this. Having been on holiday and had to be evacuated, albeit for a totally different but very scary reason, I know if I had a holiday booked and that same situation became a risk I would gladly forfeit any money.
Not sure if thats helpful, but holidays are to relax and enjoy, if you will worry while you're there I'm not sure its worth it.

Definitely not. Cyprus is a prime target because of our bases there. No one knows how long this will go on. least of all Trump. We have abandoned plans for a trip to Italy because it is in range of Iran's missiles. Maybe over cautious but there are other destinations and we hadn't yet booked. Apart from actual danger there is a good chance of travel disruptions.

Goodness me 🤣

Viviennemary · 12/03/2026 20:41

No don't think I would.

JehovasFitness · 12/03/2026 21:00

I’d go. You’re more likely to slip in the shower and break your neck than to get blown up by Hezbollah in an EU tourist resort.

Unless you plan on standing on the runway at one of the UK bases, I think you’ll be fine.

I might book it, especially if the prices drop.

MaidOfSteel · 12/03/2026 21:07

Yes. We booked moths ago and are due to fly out there in a few days time. Unless the flight is cancelled, we’ll be going. I’m not scared or worried right now. But I am watching the situation closely.

stayawayfromthattrapdoor · 13/03/2026 09:33

It will be cheaper NOT to go - she will get 10% back and not incur the costs of being away.

The only affordability question is whether OP could afford another holiday if she didn’t go on this one.

People get into a weird mindset about not wanting to “lose money”. The money is spent either way - the choice is whether OP would be safer and happier going or not going.

What does your travel insurance say?

Travel insurance typically doesn’t cover events that occur as a result of war.

Personally I think it is unlikely OP would actually be at risk of direct harm. However, I think the main considerations would be:

-would you be able to relax/enjoy the trip? That’s very personal - some people would be able to, others would be on edge the whole time.

-risk of flight cancellation/travel disruption that’s not covered by insurance, and/or whether this is a package deal that might provide more support with rearranging travel than booking independently.

finalpunt · 13/03/2026 11:47

I wouldn't want to go but I wouldn't want to lose my money either.
I think its most likely to be fine but I would only go if I had enough back up funds for flights and accommodation incase there was an issue and possibly no important events that were close to return time that I wouldn't mind missing if I was stranded for a bit.
Think biggest problem is lack of help from insurance if something were to happen as it doesn't cover acts of war.
Been to Paphos a few times though and its beautiful

maddiemookins16mum · 13/03/2026 11:54

No and I say that as someone who lived/worked there for many years and love it. Cyprus will suffer terribly because of this although I dare say that once (if) this all ends there’ll be some bargain holidays up for grabs. The holiday firms will have a lot of unsold Cyprus holidays on their books that they’ll have already paid the hotelier upfront for (especially Tui who have a lot of guaranteed hotels there).

The resort by the airport?

I think it would be reasonable to ask your travel agent what provision they are making for holidaymakers they're sending there in the event of the airport being bombed, given Paphos is the same location and only a 45-minute drive from RAF Akrotiri.

I personally wouldn't be risking it. If you were staying at the other end of the island I might think differently.

Cyprus has two airports. One case scenario they’d fly from Larnaca. Worst case scenario they’d be evacuated by boat to somewhere else and fly from there. No High Street Travel Agent is going to be aware of any contingency plans in the event of something happening at this point in time and that would all fall on the Tour Operator/Foreign Office/Govt. Other scenarios would be flying from the Turkish occupied territory of Cyprus.

If Cyprus was attacked then it’s likely the Armed Forces would also assist with repatriations of British Citizens and holiday makers by air and by sea.

I'm going at the end of Sept/beg of October for a music festival . Praying all the turmoil is over by then

There is an airport at the other end too and it’s much closer to a British base than Paphos is, unless you mean the other end as in Rizokarpaso.

Overtheatlantic · 13/03/2026 13:56

I wouldn’t but Mogadishu (sp?) is sounding great.

KiposWonderbeasts · 13/03/2026 14:09

I wouldn't book a new holiday anywhere on the Easter Med shores at the moment, but if I had one already booked for Cyprus I think I'd go.

But I don't tend to worry or ruminate, so I'd relax and enjoy it. If you are the sort to fret or feel anxious, I'd not go because you won't enjoy yourself.

Bluenan · 13/03/2026 19:50

We are going at the end of the month. Life is going on as normal. We have lots of friends that live there, who tell us everything is opening up ready for Easter. Papers scaremongering at their best!

101Alsatians · 13/03/2026 19:59

Yes,it's business as usual here.I won't lie that as locals we're a bit peturbed, but that's understandable. We are used to being relentlessly bored (and hot)

YourPithyHelper · 15/03/2026 22:24

Honestly I have lived there for 3 years just got back to the UK , I can tell you Cypriots are terrified of this effecting the holiday makers AND RIGHTLY SO . They will down play every thing even the expats out there UNTIL they can’t anymore . It’s literally right next to country’s who are at war but also now full of German , Spanish , Turkish , ENGLISH fighter jets and British bases that have already been attacked …
I don’t mean to sound rude but it’s not worth the risk . If there isn’t another attack there will be terrorism strikes … anyone saying against this has no idea how bad this is .
stay safe cxx
