Only the doorbell isn't actually going off... Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Maybe tinnitus?

MissyB1 · 11/03/2026 22:38

It’s a door slamming for me, or heavy object crashing down. Really unnerving and sounds very real. So glad it’s not just me!

I occasionally dream that I am in the bed alone, and my DH has come into the bedroom, and is shaking me to wake me up. I am facing the wall and he is shaking me, and I am trying to turn around to get out of bed, and he is pinning me down, stopping me moving, and I am really upset and stressed, and crying out to him 'let me GO!' He won't let go, and I can feel the pain of his nails digging into my shoulders.

It is SO real, and quite scary. I have woken up shouting out 'noooooooooo' before now, but no sound comes out. DH is already up, and is in the lounge having breakfast, or is in the shower, or already at work.

Nowhere near me!!! 😱

I have had this dream about 10 times over the past 5-6 years. No idea why, as he is not aggressive or shouty, and he doesn't scare me. Weird!

I also occasionally have a dream that one of my DC is calling out for me, but they left home some years ago.

I have also had dreams over this past 3-4 months (and it does feel so real!) that my little darling cat is mewing in my face, and rubbing up against me, and I wake up really upset, because she died 6 months ago, aged 15, and I realise she isn't there at all. 😢

Oddly, I have never had a dream about anyone knocking on the door, or the doorbell ringing. (Though we have never had a doorbell!)

These dreams are stress related. They happen more often when stressed. It’s one of my warning signs. When I’m constantly nagged at/interrupted by phones, alarms, doorbells, it’s because I’m getting hyper vigilant and can’t relax. The brain finds/creates a reason for the body’s tension.

ThePoshUns · 11/03/2026 23:35

Oh wow I thought it was only me that this happened to.
It leaves my heart racing when it happens, fortunately not too often.

PGmicstand · 11/03/2026 23:56

I had this about a week ago. I was absolutely convinced someone had rung the doorbell. To the point that in the end, I crept downstairs and checked the doors were locked, and that there was nobody outside.
Given that I'd been fast asleep with earplugs in, it's absolutely certain that I imagined it.

I also remember some years ago when I'd had Covid and was convinced that the microwave kept beeping. Nobody else could hear it though, it was so vivid.

People knock on my front door in the middle of the night. Except…they don’t. Same thing!

I might have had this a few weeks ago, I couldn't relax enough to go back to sleep. Until this thread I'd never heard if it being 'phantom' (wish I'd know that was 'a thing') I was incredibly pissed off as I have bad insomnia (often not sleep at all, all night) so on the rare occasion I'm actually sleeping, anything that wakes me up pisses me off a lot.

SerenityScout · 12/03/2026 00:18

Yeah, it's so annoying.

Somersetbaker · 12/03/2026 11:35

Sometimes the doorbell, sometimes I hear the sound my phone makes when a text come in, oddly I never hear it ringing, occasionally somebody coming up the stairs. Only when I'm at home, never when I'm in away.

Pericombobulations · 12/03/2026 11:40

I get this too. Glad to know I’m not alone.

That sounds like sleep paralysis, I get this but only the waking up unable to move or speak, some people have dreams preceding it or hallucinations of being held down

DancingLions · 12/03/2026 12:55

I get this a lot. It's annoying if I'm taking a nap and expecting a delivery! I end up jumping up for no reason.

Both my adult DC have exploding head syndrome. I think it's quite common.
