2186 unread emails

Has anyone managed to clear their inbox of spam? I currently have 2186 unread emails in my gmail and yahoo inboxes and they are mainly spam. I can’t delete everything in my inboxes as they contain important information and I can’t open a new email. How can I get rid of all the spam and stop it coming back? Unsubscribing to emails doesn’t seem to work.

That doesn't sound unmanagable if you do it in chunks by sorting by sender then blocking the ones you don't want

You could probably do that in an hour or so

I have a purge of emails every so often - if you don't want them don't just delete but unsubscribe from the list, that way you won't get any more. I also set up rules so if I get something I want to keep but don't want to read (e.g. M&S receipt) then I set up a rule and it automatically goes in the "receipts" folder.

I have nearly 100000 unread emails. I just can't be bothered to delete them. It makes no difference to me either way if they're there or not.

Bjorkdidit · 10/03/2026 14:28

I've got like that @TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot

I've tried and tried to stop them coming and they still do - all those 'we can't email you unless you give us permission' GDPR related cries were clearly bollocks.

So now I don't look at any of them and just leave them there as management of emails that I never asked for is so far down my list of life admin that it may as well not exist.

It's photos that take up all the room in my gmail account and I've finally worked out how to stop deleted photos coming back, so I'm having a cull and am going to compress some of the older ones to try and not run out of space. Because there's no way in hell that I'm paying Google to store digital clutter that I never asked to receive.

I delete my spam folder every couple of days. I never have any unread emails - that would drive me nuts. It's very easy to keep on top of it - 2 minutes per day, if that.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2026 14:39

I don't have any emails in my personal inbox that I haven't dealt with Halo

I check my emails two or three times a day and delete any I don't need. Having an inbox full of unread emails would annoy me, I need to feel in control of it.

The deleted folder empties itself every thirty days so I just ignore that. I empty the junk folder every day because I get unreasonably irritated by spam.

CherrySparkling · 10/03/2026 14:40

117,630 unread emails here.

With gmail you can create a folder and just move everything into it unread. That way you don't need to pick out the important ones and you can still have a nice empty inbox.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/03/2026 14:44

Is there a filter you can turn on so only email addresses you know go into your inbox? That would help keep on top of it in the future. But otherwise just order it by sender. Unsubscribe from as much as you can. Block.

Thelnebriati · 10/03/2026 15:01

The unsubscribe button only works for legitimate companies; it tells spammers your account is active, and they'll sell your email address to other spammers.

If you don't recognise the sender, mark it as spam and block them.

mindutopia · 10/03/2026 15:16

I had 15,000, not all of it spam so genuinely had to look at it before deleting. Yes, I did 1000 a day or so and cleared it in less than 2 weeks.

I also unsubscribed to stuff I didn’t want and I get very little now.
