It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) Friend only to The Undertaker
(Edwin Starr 1970, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong)

Unless, of course, your name ends in Trump, when it ain't nothing but an opportunity to grift, deflect and destroy.

He said this on AF1, re China:

We’d like to know before that. It’s [two weeks is] a long time,” Trump said. “We may delay,” he added of the trip to China, without specifying how long any delay could last."

Wish I could see a clip to know why the two weeks is in brackets. But yup, there we have it. Two weeks is a long time.

"I am more and more baffled daily as to how such an insane, very strange, appalling businessman, poor at understanding war person is in this position to play his tantrums out on the world stage - it’s very hard to believe it’s actually real."

I know, @MsJinks - I’ve been feeling like this since Brexit, actually, the two are enduringly intertwined in my mind. I was constantly being teased and made to feel quite foolish by friends about my warnings about Trump and how it would be an absolute disaster for the world if he were elected in 2016 (I gather Robert de Niro, not talking Italian, felt the same way) - won’t affect us, they said, it’s just a problem for the Americans, they said, forgetting that old adage about America sneezing and the world catching pneumonia. Pah, say I, it gives me no pleasure that I was right.

Maybe somewhere in the fog of what passes as a brain for him, he has a distant memory of Harold Wilson’s week being a long time in politics?

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom- yes, the rise of populism with Trump and Brexit appealing to voters in one year.
It was such a pleasure (to me) to get Biden and not be surprised daily by strange rants, also glad Trump/Tories weren’t in power together from then on tbh.

The last US voting I kept hearing Trump wasn’t so bad in his first term, and didn’t start wars (I know!). I cannot credit people find him ‘refreshing’, ‘does what he says’, ‘says it how it is’ etc etc - like anthropomorphising and worshipping an alligator for ‘alligator ing’ - that we can see his ramblings daily on a loop in today’s world make it all the more puzzling to me.

Saddened for the kids, grandkids and their peers. I now go out campaigning against the far right here, a recent thing for me when I finally got too fed up/worried - mainly makes me feel like I’m doing something useful - though I know it has little to no real impact in the way of changing things.

Everyone said we were hysterical.

Particularly about Roe.

And yet here we are.

Same. I’ve now been to 3 anti-Trump protests (when he comes for his state visits), and if you’d have told me 15 years ago that I’d be at protests, I wouldn’t have believed you.

RedTagAlan · 16/03/2026 08:22

Is there any pro Trump threads or posters still about ? I fancy popping along to see how it is going.

RedTagAlan · 16/03/2026 08:53

Hakeem Jeffries says there will be a vote today on Trumps war powers.

I reckon this is a way out for Trump. If he gets some of his repugs to fall on their swords, and the vote goes against him, he can walk away while blaming others.

PerkingFaintly · 16/03/2026 09:11

It might be a way out for Trump, but it's not a way out for the world.

The attack on Iran isn't something where the US just stops bombing and then everyone goes home and the world goes back to how it was.

It's not even a case of if Israel stops bombing too (which they won't) then the world goes back to how it was.

The things broken in the last few weeks are broken beyond repair. And I'm not just talking about the dead and injured.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 16/03/2026 09:14

Just musing on Pope Leo XIV’s latest pronouncements on the war in Iran and wondering how JD Vance feels they might apply to him. Is his Catholicism maybe the reason he’s been keeping his head down since the beginning? (Sorry if this has already been asked and answered, it’s only just occurred to me!)

DuncinToffee · 16/03/2026 09:19

Japan and Australia said they were not planning to send navy vessels to the Middle East to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Funny you should both say that. (Funny peculiar, definitely not funny haha.)

I was just yesterday reading about the inroads US influencers and US money are making against UK abortion rights.

How US groups are driving a new generation of anti-abortion activism in the UK
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2dl5j0w23o

And exactly as you say, @Jaichangecentfoisdenom , when we try to discuss this on MN the usual suspects quickly arrive to shush us: "Don't be so silly. Stop bothering your pretty heads about something so unlikely... Ooh look, a fish!"

A treated black and white image of an anti-abortion march

The killing of Charlie Kirk galvanised a transatlantic campaign against abortion. But will it succeed in shifting Britain's pro-choice consensus?

Not his Catholicism itself, but fear of disapproval by Catholic power – be it represented by the Pope or by a voting block.

Vance is the ultimate toadying chameleon. (Two reptiles at once!)

He'll suck up to whoever it takes.

I think everyone is trying to find who said they would.

I think we can take that Greenlander fella with the MAGA hat as a given, but I don't think he ever got the hospital boat Trump promised him.

I suppose there is always the Florida MAGA boat club though.

The (some of) world says "no".

China has responded. In their usual "pragmatic" way, on the front page of their state media.

The security of Hormuz doesn’t depend on the number of warships patrolling it - Global Times

That's a no. And with Chinese state media, that is all Party approved, the other articles alongside the target subject are important too. Notable in todays edition is that PRC and Vietnam are best pals today,

UYN · 16/03/2026 09:51

Even if every country agreed to help escort ships - wouldn't Iran just then have a handy channel full of US allies to pepper with drone attacks?

How long could the 'protectors' keep up the escorting - a day? a week?

How are they proposing to shift the already bombed ships that are blocking certain areas? If more ships get bombed won't the Hormuz then be totally blocked?

Then the situation is actually 1000x worse.

It's not viable at all.

In fact its preposterous and downright stupid.

MsJinks · 16/03/2026 09:59

Spandauer · 16/03/2026 09:32

The (some of) world says "no".

So glad to see this - would not wish to be working for Trump today though!

I have to wonder at the US military- did they just have to accept they had to go into war with no defined ‘success’ criteria, no clear method to work towards an acceptable outcome, no idea what the CinC expects or wants - or is this not uncommon and they make their own decisions on what to do/aim towards?

And did they believe trump when he said his allies would help? I wouldn’t want my kids (or anyone) having to be in the US military under Trump - it must be so demoralising for them, and hard to maintain morale - not to mention the dreadful loss of life - which I would see as being unnecessary here.

I could be completely incorrect on how it is for them as I don’t know much (if anything) about military - or war really.

MsJinks · 16/03/2026 10:02

Trump is so inconceivably bad at this with his hare brained ideas - I can’t comprehend how he’s allowed to do all this shite.

We had all the clues with ideas of bleach injections and nuclear bombing hurricanes - as Mumsnet says ‘when he shows you who he is, believe him’ - pity not enough US voters are on here.

Has he asked Cuba yet ?

That could be interesting. Please send your ships and I promise not to invade you while they are away.

MAGAism literally Trumps religion.

If the Pope steps out of line ... well he's antifa isn't he ? Can't be a real Pope as we know the real Pope would confirm that god and jesus are behind Trump.

During Brexit, there was a brief whisper that the Queen could always decline to sign the bill. At which point all the flag waving royalists suddenly became vehement republicans. (They will deny it now, but the internet remembers)

A small aside - I keep getting travel ads for the US (here, on Mumsnet). America the beautiful, America the breathtaking, America the brilliant. 🤮
No I really, really don't want to visit the US right now while mangopoop is in charge. Just goes to show how stoopid algorithms can be. They think I'm interested!
