It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) Friend only to The Undertaker
(Edwin Starr 1970, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong)

Unless, of course, your name ends in Trump, when it ain't nothing but an opportunity to grift, deflect and destroy.

That's nothing new: twenty years ago when my son was in the Navy and posted in the Gulf it was common knowledge.

And let's not forget Agent Orange in Vietnam.

When in doubt there is always napalm to deplore.

I hope that this war will be the one thing that sees Trump off. Let the midterms show this. MAGAts are none too happy.

I think they've been very busy coming up with ways to nullify that particular outcome.

Yes. Dems are fighting against this tooth and nail but the requirements to vote that Trump is going for is beyond a joke. And the redistricting of course.

Hang on: does that mean we are supposed to know that they think bombing and killing people is a game?

Well they definitely said the quiet part out loud…

And let's not forget Agent Orange in Vietnam.

He's still in the Whitehouse.

Just read this description of Kegseth:

"A weapons grade, industrial strength, fair dinkum, ocean going wanker.”

Bread and circuses, just as it always was. Will be man Vs animal next on the White House lawn with bear baiting or some gladiatorial combat. Where is Maximus when you need him?

UFC fighters, cool! Has construction started on the Hitler Trump stadium yet, or are they waiting to start under the cover of an invasion of Cuba?

I've just watched the movie Nuremberg and was struck by the similarities between Trump and Hitler.
MAGA and America first policies vs Germany for Germans
Use of current technology to spread propaganda - I see you Bullshite Barbie, the WH's X account and Trump's Truth Social
Incited fear and hatred of brown people/Jews to foster the othering of other races
ICE cf the SS
US and Germany's move from democracy to dictatorship

I feel a thesis coming on...

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/03/2026 18:23

"struck by the similarities between Trump and Hitler."

There is even a coincidental Olympic Games.

(sigh)

The World Cup might provide a Jessie Owens moment for your thesis.

I think you might need to use really big words to explain that. Words well beyond my ability for sure. A raid on a few volumes on philosophy beckons perhaps.

If I had to try to formulate it in my head it would have to be graphic over time. The slow gradual fall of one white supremacist system, rapid rise and fall of another, in which the first played a part then the rise of the first again modeled on the 2nd.

Edit - change word.

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2026 18:40

@logicisall

I was struck by the similarities in Nuremberg too. And I don't think the 'cinematic empahsis' put on the similarities was at all coincidental.

It's an excellent movie. I rented it and actually watched it twice, the 2nd time to catch subtle things I missed the first time!

CNN TV breaking: "Car packed with explosives rams Detroit area synagogue"

No fatalities reported, security guard injured.
Suspect dead.

It appears the synagogue's school was targeted. Drove through doors and proceeded to drive down the hallway.

Explosives found in vehicle. Suspect armed.

PerkingFaintly · 12/03/2026 18:46

Oh god.

Well good news that no fatalities reported apart from the suspect. Hope that remains true.

It's already been written. IIUC Steve Bannon has studied all this in depth and consciously modelling his programme on previous dictatorships.

Also, remember when Melania appeared in that inauguration outfit with overcoat and hat? I saw various commentators speculating that her lapels were supposed to be 50s or 70s.

No. The look was 1930s men's greatcoat.

And just in case we didn't notice the first time, she repeated the lapels in the jacket of her official portrait – that power pose of her leaning on a desk.

Bannon wanted to open a 'Gladiator school' in Italy

PerkingFaintly · 12/03/2026 19:26

For me Melania's official costumes are as deliberate as those of Nazi-cosplayer Greg Bovino.

And of the repeated recycling of historic fascist slogans.

None of it's accidental. They're getting off on doing it in public and giggling that no one can stop them.

Yes exactly. See also Andrew Tate.

Re the similarities between 🍑 and Hitler, the BBC did a good series a few years ago called Rise of the Nazis: Dictators at War

It was about Hitler and Stalin but focused a lot on the people around them and how a culture of fear, alongside blind ambition, led to a situation where the dictators genuinely thought they could not fail.

its worth a watch, a lot of parallels to now.

Re the Strait of Hormuz, Rory Stewart was saying Iran doesn’t need to mine it - it’s so shallow in places (comparatively speaking) that all they need to do is strategically sink a few big ships (old wrecks if necessary) and the shipping containers won’t be able to navigate it for years.

Exactly this. The bathymetry means only a specific part of it is navigable by bigger ships and even that part would be compromised by a couple of big wrecks, say, sunken oil tankers or cargo ships. The average depth of the strait is about 70m but that encompasses a narrow deep zone and a lot of shallows. The navigable channel is the deepest part - close to 100-200m with a southern side which shallows rapidly.

As I said earlier on the thread, the draft for a tanker is pretty deep, add on the required factor of safety and then the prominence of a wreck and the required safe clearance distance above it. Ships also need to keep a safe distance from each other which in a narrow channel, restricts how many can safely traverse it at the same time.

I dare say there are mines there though.

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2026 23:50

@TiredCatLady

Thank you for adding to my vocabulary! I'm now walking around my flat muttering 'baTHYmetry' over and over to be sure I'm pronouncing in correctly.

I plan to find some way to insert that word into a conversation in the near future 😆

I love words!

I am not disagreeing with you at all, I am just throwing in that it turns of the ships that have passed through are PRC flagged. So there might be pressure on Iran from there.

And to add to what @TiredCatLady says, the Straight of Malacca has similar depth issues. And to get around that to an extent, the PRC built both oil and gas pipes through Myanmar.

Energy security. Much of it baffles me, but one thing for sure, Trump won't have a clue.

The US is easing sanctions on Russian oil stranded at sea to “curb price rises”.
