I want to but it would probably only be for my benefit, so not sure its worth it ..

No. Not a thing I'd ever come across until I joined Mumsnet, to be honest. But then I'm a lazy, cynical old trout who can barely be bothered with Christmas decorations, let alone Easter.
I always make sure there are Spring flowers in the house, though, so I'm not completely beyond redemption.

curious79 · 09/03/2026 06:52

I don’t put up Easter decorations - we just have things like a simnal cake and a nice bunch of flowers. it’s a naff American habit we could all do without as it encourages consumption and waste

LysistrataSusanCarter · 09/03/2026 06:53

We have an Easter tree and my teens would be mightily put out if we didn’t. Just a branch in a vase. When I was eleven we visited friends in The Netherlands and I was so taken with theirs I bought hanging decorations with my pocket money. We still use those decorations, plus others gathered along the way (mostly from market in Central Europe.)

We are rarely home for Easter itself but it’s a nice way to mark the arrival of Spring and Holy Week.

Easter decorations are not American in origin. Many houses in Central and Northern Europe have them. And therefore so do many American households because many Americans have their cultural roots in that part of Europe.

Yes, people can choose to have light up bunnies or plastic eggs about the place. But just as likely are greenery and wooden decorations, which are neither wasteful nor naff. They just bring a bit of joy to a significant time of year.

MrsClattenburg · 09/03/2026 06:59

No, never have and never will but then we never did the Easter Bunny either (kids are old now)

I LOVE decorating for Christmas but that's the only thing we trim up for.

Same here!

Same. I have only seen Easter decorations as a "thing" on mumsnet TBH.

It was a “thing” in Germany when I was a very small child, 50 odd years ago. Most of my Easter tree decorations are my mum’s from back then.

ETA Christ, the sneering at something (wrongly) thought to be American 🙄.

WinterBlues26 · 09/03/2026 07:39

The only Easter decorations I've ever done (or seen growing up) are the lined up gifted Easter eggs on the fireplace. We used to make Easter bonnets at primary but that's it. Can anyone tell me what they comprise off, or have photos?

But if they bring you joy OP then go for it 🐇🐣

reluctantbrit · 09/03/2026 07:40

Yes, absolutely. For full disclosure I am German and it's absolutely normal that people put decorations up for Easter. So when I moved out, I started doing it myself. I'm not stopping just because DD has now moved to university.

We normally have some pussy willows with decorated eggs, either homemade from blown out eggshells, Wood, papermche, ceramic plus we have a couple of ornaments and I normally try to get some flowers as well.

Nomedshere · 09/03/2026 07:48

Never decorate at any time of the year but always have fresh spring flowers

It was only this year we begrudgingly (inwardly...outwardly to ds3 we were delightful) decorated for halloween. Ds3 (8) begged to because alllll his friends do. I mean we always did pumpkins but when our elder two (18 and 16) were little, decorations weren't such a 'thing'.

So now we do Xmas (obvs), halloween...and we 'do' the bastard elf.

The Easter Bunny can get fucked if he thinks i'm buying a load more tat to decorate for Easter too.

Edited

My mum was born and grew up in Germany so I'm surprised we didn't have them as children, but we did have Easter egg hunts before they were a thing.

BTW I wasn't sneering. I just hadn't come across them before reading about them on here, and none of my friends or family do Easter decorations either.

MyOpalCat · 09/03/2026 16:03

Quite a lot of houses with younger kids do it here.

It's not something we've done TBH.

We got enough flack from our parents doing hallowean decorations- didn't grow up with it pumpkin at most - and easter egg hunts (which IL then tried to take over after being very disapproving of ) and few easter traditions I have slipped in have had to fit round family visits and disapporval and later exams.

Youngest is asking to do nest cakes - but once she flown the nest I think Hallowan, even bonfire night and Easter bar an egg each won't be a thing - and we'll just do Christmas - which is what we grew up with really.

Will be a bit sad I think - but then I think I had more church traditions in background like palm sunday and christingles in background from C of E school in earlier childhood and chruch which DH really didn't.

Calibrachoa · 09/03/2026 16:06

Yes, I've got a little tree I hang eggs on. Both dc at uni but I do it as I love this time of year

AgnesMcDoo · 09/03/2026 16:07

Easter decorations?

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 09/03/2026 16:08

Out of interest, when did Easter decorations become a thing? I'm 52 and my parents never did it when I was little and I genuinely don't know anyone who ever has done any.

Hazelnuticecream · 09/03/2026 16:11

As with others, never did it when they were little (or when I was little) so won't start now, but also as others have said, if you want to, why not, I think it can look lovely. We did do egg hunts, which I didn't do as a child and I hadn't really thought about it, but they are 18 and 16 now so I don't know if they will want it this year - maybe last year was the last year! On the other hand they will get less chocolate if they don't so who knows.

Sourisblanche · 09/03/2026 16:16

When I was little we used to blow eggs out and paint the empty shell.

I love Easter and will be getting my box of decorations out towards the end of March.

I think Easter trees started in Germany, same as Christmas trees. Sometimes people like a tradition from another country and copy it.
It's one of those things that some people will be very disdainful of, while others will think "It gives me pleasure, so I'll do it" and not care about the sniffy ones.

ginasevern · 09/03/2026 16:31

@RampantIvy "Is it a recent thing to do so? Easter was very special when I was a child in the 1960s, but we didn't have Easter decorations. Just an Easter egg hunt and a small token gift."

I was a child in the 60's. The closest we came to Easter "decorations" were the hand painted eggs we did at school. We'd prick the eggs with pins, blow the contents out and then paint the shells often with faces on. We'd use pipe cleaners for arms and legs if I recall correctly. We never had Easter egg hunts though but always queued up at the local bakers for freshly made hot cross buns!

MyOpalCat · 09/03/2026 16:35

Easter decoration did start to appear in shop when DC were young but its only in last few years I've started seeing them about walking round in UK.

I've quite enjoyed marking the different event days in the year with the kids - which I think is just a parenting change but it does feels likes something that perhaps gone a bit from wider secular life.

fatphalange · 09/03/2026 17:22

Yes but I’m not kidding myself. They’re for my own enjoyment, the younger kids couldn’t care less!
