How old are you and how many kids do you have?

How old is everyone on here, with how many children? Just to be a nosey cow.

Im 28 with 2 kids. I was chatting to a mum I know from nursery today and found out she's 32 with 4 kids. I had always hoped to have 4 kids because I always wanted a big family. Now that ive separated from my ex I cant really see that happening with anyone else.

If it did happen again, it would take a long time for me to be comfortable enough to have kids with someone else, and im just thinking I really don't know if I could be bothered to do it all again in my mid-30s or later. Not to mention the scaremongering against having kids beyond this age. If i did end up with only my 2, I would still remain overjoyed, as they do keep me very busy and are the light of my life. Equally, if I could have more, I most definitely would. I just love being a mum/motherhood.

Did anyone here have kids at a later age, and did it go smoothly (i.e. pregnancy and birth)? Or does anyone on here have kids with a large age gap, and if so, how has it played out I.e. sibling relationships?
There are 10 years between me and my older brother, and our relationship was always very poor (though for a number of other reasons, too). This also puts me off having more later in life.

Nine years between me and my sister. There is zero chance I would have a large age gap between kids based on my experience of it.

Ugh this is exactly what I was thinking. If I were to have a child age 35 for example, there would be 10 years between them and my eldest, and I don't think it would be fair on either of them to do that. I have heard of a very few cases where large age gaps work really well, but from my experience, it just doesnt :(

Did you just fight a lot? For me and my brother the age gap just meant we has zero in common and he found me really annoying lol

I was the oldest. We had nothing in common, but I also wasn't old enough to be independent and just got sidelined as my mum had to focus on the toddler. Just far too different needs regarding parenting, and too different in age to be able to relate to each other or have any interest in each other. And yes, also argued in an annoying way.

Inkout · 08/03/2026 20:34

I’m 37 and have three kids. Eldest is four. Would love a fourth. I suppose I probably sound quite ancient to you! 😱

Statsquestion1 · 08/03/2026 20:35

40 with 2 dc….and I am sooooo done! Never wanted more than two.

SarahAndQuack · 08/03/2026 20:37

I'm 41; DD is 8 and will be nine when her brother is born.

I think how siblings get on doesn't have that much to do with age gaps, and I know quite a lot of people with different kinds of age gaps.

I had a heck of a job getting to the point of having another one (IVF and faffing around), and I'm doing it on my own, but the actual pregnancy has been lovely and it has been so nice that DD has been very excited. She went through the 'can I have a brother or sister' stage, which lots of children do, but long after that she's loved playing with littler children and is very patient with them. She seems to be really pleased to get to be a big sister and I am delighted about that. I hope they get on! Grin

Icanflyhigh · 08/03/2026 20:38

47 with 3, eldest 21, then 16 and youngest 13.
Would have loved more but that ship has sunk!

Rituelec · 08/03/2026 20:40

Im 38 and have 4 children but had first at 17 and last at 29.

BlueEyesCryingInTheRain · 08/03/2026 20:41

I'm 38 and have 4 children - from 10 to 2.
I was one of 7, dh has 4 siblings.
We are probably unusual in that all our siblings get along very well, no family fallouts, lots of meetups with cousins etc.
I do remember having physical fights with my sisters who are one year older and one year younger than me. My mother was an actual saint!

CinnamonSwirlLatte · 08/03/2026 20:42

36 and pregnant with number 7

CoodleMoodle · 08/03/2026 20:45

Nearly 37 with 2DC, 12 and 7. Not having any more babies for a variety of reasons but the massive age gap is one of them.

I'm an only child but DH has an 8 year gap with his older sister, he said she was more like an aunty to him when he was growing up. DD already "mothers" DS enough (her choice, she always has), she doesn't need a much younger sibling to worry about!

Madthings · 08/03/2026 20:46
  1. Met partner at uni. 6 kids total

Had our eldest when at uni age 20.

The next 4 all with 10 years. So first 5 are close together. Then a gap of almost 6 years and a bonus baby, and then I split from my husband age 39, after 20 years together.

But there was no way even if i met someone else in my late 30's, early 40's that I would have had any more. I think blending families if done well is lovely but incredibly hard work in reality.

I think all age gaps have their pros and cons.

Crushed23 · 08/03/2026 20:47

36 and zero. If we decide to have a baby we’ll definitely stop at one.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 08/03/2026 20:47

I’m 56 with one adult child. My sister and brother are 12 and 10 years older than I am and I get on really well with my sister especially.

Yeah that's exactly how it was for us too, really. Guess it can just be really bad of an idea tbf

52 with two teenagers who are just under 2 years apart. Used to fight all the time but seem to have turned a corner recently. Did think about a 3rd when youngest was two but DH not keen and in hindsight we made the right decision. I didn’t love the 1-4 yrs stage so going through it all again wouldn’t have been a great idea. Definitely no more now for obvious reasons!!

This was my issue. I was so excited to be a big sister, I loved kids. And then the baby came and I was so happy. But obviously the baby/toddler just wanted their mum. I couldn't comfort them even though I tried. I felt rejected and hurt. I was old enough to want to help and take care of them but too young to understand it was a personal rejection (I mean, plenty of dads struggle with this as well, let alone a nine year old). So I totally withdrew from them and didn't want anything to do with them. I hope it goes better for you, but just so you're aware of the pitfalls of a child who is excited.

Lol, my DD is very much like this. DS 4 and DD 2. She loves looking after her toys and her brother, bless her. I think she would adapt well to a new sibling, but my eldest has additional needs and I'm just really not sure it's in his best interests, especially.

Age gaps aren’t always bad. My DB was 20 when I was born ( same mum different dad). We are now 40 and 60 and have always been really close.

I'm sorry your parents didn't manage that better - you poor thing!

I hope you understand that, probably, any sibling relationship you'd had would have been problematic, because the issue was your parents failing to help you with that transition, not you or your sibling. You should never have been allowed to feel like that. It's rotten.

That's the same age gap as mine lol. Glad they're getting along now. I am kinda glad I only have 2 right now, it's just that the thought of another feels almost magnetic. i Just don't know that it would be in anybody's best interests.

40 with one DS18. I wasn't able to have any more children, although would have happily accepted a large age gap in order to, but it wasn't meant to be.
I have three siblings, 12 years older, 9 years older, 9 years younger (half sibling). I might as well be an only. I only really see them at Christmas with very little contact in between with the older two who have a little clique without me. I'm probably closest to my younger half sibling and we didn't even grow up together.
