Interested in other opinions. Any kind of mountain and lakes type break really. I've already done Switzerland twice, google is throwing up pretty much every country so hoping someone on here actually has experience...

Many years ago on an activity holiday, we had an amazing couple of days canoeing (not kayaking - We were in open canoes for two people) on the Ardeche river. Others were kayaking I think. We slept under the stars and had a barbecue along the way. It was really memorable in scorching August weather. I can remember jumping into the the river to cool down periodically.

This is the sort of thing:

Gorges du Verdun and Ardeche gorges as mentioned before

We did some enjoyable kayaking in Omis in Croatia - starts upriver and ends up in the sea. You can also kayak at loads of coastal locations in Croatia including round the Dubrovnik old town walls. Very hot in summer though.

Slovenia has some great white water in the soca valley
Croatia if you like sea kayaking - the Adriatic tends to be quite flat

Namechangeforthis88 · 08/03/2026 22:46

Soca river, Croatia is meant to be good.

Croatia.

France is very good. As well as the Ardeche and the Gorges du Verdon/Esparron / Lac Sainte Croix area mentioned upthread (Castellane is fab but a bit hit and miss in high summer as the dam doesn’t open daily and can get cancelled). Durance and Ubaye if you are into white water. We have also kayaked on the Var, the Sorgue and the Gardon.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 08/03/2026 22:52

Lots of Croatia crossed posts.

Wales. The River Teifi at Llandysul.

The Stans and Sweden

Slovenia has some amazing spots for kayaking

We have done kayaking in Finland at Arola Bears (also have brown bears in the wild and homemade Finnish food and fruit juices) though it was close to Russian border and would need to check they still have kayaks.

In France around Dordogne seeing castles.

In UK Isles of Scilly going between islands, Norfolk broads looking for otters, Dartmouth very scenic. In the better weather think there's some in Scottish islands.

La Gomera has kayaking with dolphins and turtles as does Tenerife but not done it yet. Norwegian fjords have kayaking and are very scenic but £££. Wild Sweden runs some kayak trips looking for wildlife.
