…that the metal plates on a toastie maker can be removed for cleaning? Just discovered it on mine, only taken me 40 years!!

OMG! I never knew this!

mrbluebirdonmyshoulder · 06/03/2026 16:55

No I didn't know that. Ive always just brought a cheap £10 toastie maker, never cleaned it, and just replaced it every year.

Secret release buttons!

Blimey, you learn something new everyday.
Excellent bit of information!

youalright · 06/03/2026 17:06

Nope didn't have a clue. It took me long enough to realise toasters have pull out crumb draws

Devilsmommy · 06/03/2026 17:06

I'd imagine there are only a few left that don't have this. I've known this for years. It's usually the really cheap ones that don't have removable plates

MmeWorthington · 06/03/2026 17:09

I got mine out to check - it is a flat plated panini toaster - and no it doesn't have a button or removable plates, and now I am making a toastie in contravention of todays calorie planning 😬

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/03/2026 17:10

I didn’t know this.

Apparently, the metal brackets fixed to the sides of the oven which hold the shelves in place can also be removed, for easier oven cleaning. Or maybe it’s just some models. I’m not motivated enough to clean my oven to have tried it out yet.

Bruisername · 06/03/2026 17:11

I have always had toastie makers where you can switch the toastie plates for for waffle plates - is that not common?

Ducksbehindthesofa · 06/03/2026 17:18

Bet you didn't know that a toaster has crumb-catching plates at the bottom that slide out to be emptied, either, did you?!

DinoLil · 06/03/2026 17:32

What now?????!!! *Rushes off to the kitchen cupboard where the toastie machine lives...

ThatPearlkitty · 06/03/2026 17:34

it was many years later

ConstanzeMozart · 06/03/2026 17:41

Er, yes. Mine's old, and doesn't have release buttons, just a sort of tab at one corner that you prise off with much swearing and puffing, and which leaves you with sore thumbs.
I don't use it often. Or I get DP to clean it Grin

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/03/2026 18:23

I know this.

They also go in the dishwasher. But it's probably not all of them, just those with the quick release buttons.

I wish I was born with the lack of conscious that would allow me to do this sort of thing, life would be so much easier.

I think the OP means a sandwich toaster rather than just a toaster.

Hiddenhouse · 06/03/2026 18:50

This has blown my mind - so happy

singthing · 06/03/2026 18:54

Yes because mine has three interchangeable plates! I know, I am F-A-N-C-Y!

(toastie, waffle, panini, if you were wondering)

rightoguvnor · 06/03/2026 19:34

Like so many of these things, they are a poison chalice
Removable plates don’t protect from having to clean off all the cheese that’s melted and run down the outside of the toastie maker, after all is a toastie a toastie without a good half inch of cheese on.
Crumb tray in the toaster just encourages one to upturn the whole thing to see what falls out, and then you realise just what is causing that funny smell whenever you use the damn thing.
Shelf supports in the oven - oh yes they’ll come out easy as, but will those buggers go back in without a fight and a Google. No.

damelza · 06/03/2026 19:37

Settle down. I can't believe that some people (women I suppose) are in ecstasy finding something else to clean. Get over yourselves and have a large G+T instead and put yer feet up.

Itsmetheflamingo · 06/03/2026 19:38

Yes put mine in the dishwasher. They get so dirty and greasy they have to come off

Mindlesslyscrolling · 06/03/2026 20:25

Nope - I didn't know this - mine is 43 years old and I might check the next time I use it (once a month or less - when I take a notion). But then again, I doubt I I'll start doing at this stage anyway! 😂

dementedpixie · 06/03/2026 20:30

Some do and some dont
My current one has removable plates

Oh that makes more sense 🙈🤣🤣
