If you could go anywhere in the world for two weeks..

I have a thread running on AIBU regarding my dream holiday to Mount Sinai, Dahab and Jordan which I now have to cancel due to a government recommendation not to travel to Jordan. We were supposed to travel on 28th March for 2 weeks.
my husband and I both turn 60 this year. Our youngest child has just finished university and so after years of rearing children and paying our mortgage we are actually now both still working in quite high paying jobs with much fewer expenses.
we had booked a holiday to celebrate our birthdays that I was so excited for but will not be able to go on. I’ve no idea how much of the cost we’ll be able to recoup but leaving that aside for the moment; if you had 2 weeks off in early April and could go anywhere.. where would you go. We love hiking, snorkelling, exploring interesting cities and nature.

We are thinking of Peru and Machu Piccu for a post uni holiday next summer. Not set in stone but we want to travel in July or Aug and the weather is good then. Will be just before DH’s 60th but he’s not talking about that! 😜

Usually early April I’m thinking skiing. But perhaps SE Asia? Or Africa? I’d need to check the weather. Don’t mind the heat but don’t want lots of rain. Vietnam was brilliant (I went in Jan) and perhaps Sapo and the highlands might be better in April.

I'm a couple of years older and would really like to see Machu Pichu. I'd love to tour Japan and I'd like to go somewhere to see manta rays, Palau perhaps?

Interesting re Africa. My son suggested South Africa. My daughter was in Tanzania last summer and loved it.

This trip would have to be organised in 3 weeks so needs to be quite straightforward

Jamaica 🇯🇲

If money were no object, Bhutan.

Ca2026 · 03/03/2026 20:27

Thailand absolutely loved it there. So many different experiences in one country.

Thunderdcc · 03/03/2026 20:29

Japan for me although I'm not sure about getting myself organised in 3 weeks.

In fact anywhere that way on I think the weather is meant to be quite good in April, not quite so humid - Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam etc.

blanketsnuggler · 03/03/2026 20:29

DS just come back from South Africa and loved it. He did Joburgh, Kruger and Cape Town. He told us we have to put Kruger and Cape Town on our bucket list.

MrsPositivity1 · 03/03/2026 20:32

South Africa or Japan

sonjadog · 03/03/2026 20:35

Honestly, if it is a "trip of a lifetime" type of event, I would wait and go where you really want to go. You won't enjoy anywhere else quite as much as you won't have had the time to build up the interest and anticipation by the time you go. Go somewhere not too far for your holiday, so that you still get your break, and save you big holiday for another time.

decorationday · 03/03/2026 20:37

Do you have to cancel now? A lot could have changed by 28 March.

pinkspeakers · 03/03/2026 20:38

We had an amazing holiday last March/April to Colombia. We went for 3 weeks, but you could still have a great trip for 2.

Mintearo7 · 03/03/2026 20:38

Of the places I’ve been, I would also suggest South Africa for a 2 week holiday. Even if you want to save safari for another time, cape Town and the surrounding areas are amazing. Japan or Vietnam are also options but agree will be harder to organise.

OhDear111 · 03/03/2026 20:43

Getting flights to some destinations won’t be cheap with all the turmoil. I’d do something easy now and book elsewhere next year. South Africa would work well enough.

Twodogsonthecouch · 03/03/2026 20:52

Interesting ideas. I think I’d like longer than 2 weeks for South America.
South Africa seems more straightforward somehow.
Maybe the advice to just relax and regroup is good. I was just do looking forward to an adventure

Do you definitely have to cancel now? You can't leave it until nearer the time and see?

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 03/03/2026 20:57

Given the dates, I'd choose a tour of Morocco. Loads to see and the weather would be perfect!

Nincompoo · 03/03/2026 20:58

Thailand. But somewhere off the beaten track and as far away from Phuket or Pataya as possible.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 03/03/2026 21:20

Zimbabwe - to see the Victoria Falls, the ruins of Great Zimbabwe City and the Eastern Highlands.

Nantucket - just for the experience.

The Galapagos Islands - for the unique species of fauna & flora which occur there.
